For anyone who doesn't remember me, I'm that guy who has the obsession with Lyman the koala and was devastated by his moving from my village and leaving a koala-shaped hole in my heart. If not that, I'm also the guy who Olivia sent the dress to, insisting I dress up for her. In any case, I recently went on a two-week trip to Japan. It was awesome over there, but I also took my DS for the sweet, sweet streetpass action. I came to discuss the results of my trip in regard to this game, but first I'd like to ask how long we've had an outpost in Japan? Because I found this just outside the Amerikamura district of Osaka.

(The barista didn't look like Brewster, but he was more than happy to Irish my coffee)

If anyone would like to know more about the trip or has questions about travelling Japan in general I'd be happy to answer, but I'll return to the point of this thread.

So while travelling I had my DS on for the streetpass function, and let me tell you that it is simply GOLD. At the conclusion of my trip, I have the following:

> My HHA Showcase is completely full of the houses of Japanese mayors with rare furniture that I have been purchasing for my home (got a full set of rococo furniture in the space of three days)

> Halfway through my trip Chief moved in from one of the Streetpassed addresses, telling me he'd come from a Japanese town that I can't read. His last mayor's name was Mio and he tells me that he still dreams of her

> I lost Elmer and Rocket during my trip, so they are more than likely enjoying a new life in the town of Japanese players

> My villagers suggested a lot more Zen items for town, meaning I have a little Japanese area in my town now, including a temple bell (I saw quite a few of those, especially when I stayed in the Buddhist monastery overnight)

Since I returned:

> Kyle moved in, randomly bringing my town's wolf level to a total of three (Lobo, Chief, Kyle)

But best of all...

> I finally bumped up the number of departed villagers, AND LYMAN NOW REGULARLY APPEARS IN MY MAIN STREET

***

The birds chirped happily as they hopped around the slowly drying puddles of main street, autumn winds carrying orange and red leaves to make little boats on their surface. Craig idly watched one from his spot near the Able Sisters shop, the mayor of Rapture taking a break from his morning chores. It was a beautiful time of the year. The tree in the event plaza had started to lose it's leaves, the top of the tree skeletal in preparation of a winter hibernation. Feeling a small nip in the breeze, Craig's thoughts turned to preparing for winter. He'd never seen snow, with the exception of Mount Fuji in the distance during his mission abroad. It had been tough, but then it had been worth it. The temple bell rang out from near the lighthouse, Craig stepping away from the wall and walking to the rail. It could have been Chief or Anicotti, both near the bell as the peal rang out over the harbour. He smiled in satisfaction. The red wolf, in many ways, was something else he'd brought back from his mission abroad. And Rapture had adopted him as their own. At first he had been quiet and subdued, removed from Mio. Craig knew exactly how he felt, having been in similar states before... especially after Lyman left. After that one, Craig had shut himself in his house for years. He knew that gnawing loss all to well, and he had endeavoured not to let Chief feel that way. He'd talked to him, introduced him to everyone... and now the wolf seemed content here. The thought was balming, soothing. In many ways it helped Craig with his own demons, knowing he steered someone else away from such a hell.

"Have a good trip, chips?"

The voice behind him caught him off guard, bringing him back to reality. It was an all-too familiar one. One he hadn't thought he'd hear again. At first, he'd thought it was his mind playing tricks on him again, like it used to. A shadow with great woolly ears stretched past his feet. This wasn't his mind... this... this couldn't be...

The mayor of Rapture spun around to see his old friend standing in main street. Lyman the bodybuilding koala. Same cocky smirk, same green club tee. Craig took that one step towards the koala.

"LYMAN! YOU SON OF A-"
"CHIPS!"

(I imagines it looking something like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgPwXlTRuHs)

But anyway, I'd like to talk more about Streetpass and how amazing a resource it actually is. Because tactically I can now buy some of the more rare furniture off of people who have diligently collected it themselves. It is incredibly handy! Does anyone here take advantage of Streetpass?

Sounds like you had a fantastic time! I loved Japan - I went just before ACNL was available in Europe so I didn't take my DS to streetpass and I feel like I missed out - not just for NL but in general.

Nowadays I try to take my DS out with me at least once a week. I took it out just the other day and got 5 street passes - 3 of them also played ACNL. It used to be that I would get loads when I was in town (on my commute to and from work) but now I'm lucky to even get 1, which I find incredibly strange as I live in such a big city.

I am more of a Rooney person myself.

Hm. I guess it makes sense that Japan would have many Nintendo 3DS on Streetpass, seeing Nintendo is a Japanese institution. I went to a Pokemon center over there on a Sunday and they were having an organized tournament, which was cool to see.

Highly considering getting a full wolf town now, seeing as how I'm halfway there already by chance. I wonder how that would go: wolves, Lyman and Olivia. I can dig it :P

Oh, and with your description under your name, thought I'd add that I went to the Studio Ghibli museum. Got a photo of the Laputa guardian on the roof and everything ^^

Yes!! The Studio Ghibli museum was amazing. You're right, with Nintendo being so big in Japan they have a much higher street pass rate. Also their cities tend to be quite busy so I guess that helps.

I'm so glad you had a great time Japan, friend! ٩꒰ ?ᆺ`꒱۶

I really enjoyed going back to France (the streetpasses I got from the airport alone were insane)

I feel like gaming would be a lot of fun in Japan. I've visited a bunch of Japanese DA's and they're really detailed and intense. Plus Japan got that cute 7-11 DLC.

Lucky you!! I love Chief, so cool the way you got him. I have Freya as well so I'm partial to wolves.

I lost one of my first villagers and I was as happy as you when I found him wandering around the shops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm also a big Studio Ghibli fan and I have lots of the Zen PWPs in my town.

Well, it does make me wonder if the villages that would be made in France would be different to the villages made in Japan or the USA or my local Australia. Like, would the staple aesthetics change?

And you just reminded me to go looking for that 7-11 set in my Streetpass catalogue, Namstar. Thanks mate :P

Seeing as how having a wolf town is now a (minimal) possibility, I looked through the set of wolf villagers and I think I wouldn't mind having Freya myself now... the three wolves I have are all males.

It's kinda comforting ins some unexplainable way, in that I can still see and limitedly interact with Lyman, but at the same token I'm still available to get any new villagers that may come my way.

And I'm a big fan of Ghibli too. I purchased the Porco Rosso soundtrack from the Studio Ghibli museum, and I will listen to that when I'm playing sometimes. But when you enter they give you a ticket to the Saturn Theater where they show you a random short film from a list of about a dozen that Miyazaki has made. The ticket is a cutting of filmreel from one of the random movies, protected behind laminate. Mine was a scene from Kiki's Delivery Service, and I keep it as a bookmark :)

How much of your Japan streetpass map did you get? I'm missing about 20 places still, I want to make sure I fill them when I go back :D Glad you had such a good time!

Your little Lyman story brings a lump to my throat. I feel the same way about some of my ex-villagers, I love that they come back to check on me ;;

This just sounds like a total blast, one day I want to travel to japan and explore with my 3DS XD I am glad you had fun on your adventure!

Seems like you had lots of fun in Japan! I'd love to go there one day x_x
Btw, how does streetpass work? I've never been sure about this xD

I'm missing six. I even managed to get someone from Okinawa, which is the rarest I'm sure :)

And I have written a few stories about Lyman on here. His leaving was what made me stop playing for a few years. So I am happy to have him back, at least in some capacity.

Japan is amazing. Between the ancient side of things like temples, shrines and mausoleums, and new stuff like Akihabara and Shinsaibashi, it is a wonderful and diverse place. It took me ten years to go from when I first decided I wanted to go, you just have to save little by little :)

As for the Streetpass, you turn on the option either through the options before you enter your village when you turn on your DS for the day or by visiting Digby, not sure which. But you turn it on, then just shut the cover and go out your house. Anyone you pass it registers and if they have AC data it will port their house and everything in it into Digby's HHA showcase.

Glad you enjoyed your trip to Japan! It's definitely a paradise for Animal Crossing players (or just 3DS players in general)! In the six months I've had this game, I earned my gold Streetpass badge.

The HHA showcase is awesome, but I think I like getting Streetpassed villagers the most. I don't really have dreamies or anything, so it's fun to see who shows up, read their old letters, etc.

Wait, other people can read the letters I sent my villagers? My, how embarrassing...

I am so happy to hear of your trip to Japan!!!

It is so exciting to hear. For me, Japan has always been on my wish list but it has not turned into reality....yet.
But I know it will someday - it has always felt like destiny.

I streetpass at least once a week. I have a list of places to go. In the US there are a LOT of Nintendo Zone wifi locations partnered with AT&T wifi but not all the places have it turned on. So sometimes I go, but the Nintendo Zone part isn't working. It's an exciting game whenever I get more than 5 streetpasses - and last week randomly I got 4 Animal Crossing Streetpasses!

Honestly, I love Streetpass so much I daydream about going to Japan and having so many different people to meet.

AND you got Lyman on Main Street!!!!!!!! Someday you will get him back and we will all cheer for you. Cheers!

During my trip I was getting about twenty a day - and that was only limited by me not stopping and checking more (it caps at ten until you check). But sadly there's not much I can do like that IN Australia. Barring an anime or gaming convention, people don't really carry their DS with them down here.

And I'd recommend going for sure, and having the trip you want to have. When planning, even look into things you like but don't think could happen. For me, my favourite anime is Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. It's a horror story that takes place in a tiny traditional village in the mountains based on a real village. I went there for their once-a-year festival (except I got to drink homemade alcohol served by a miko shrine maiden, as opposed to dismembered by a psychotic redhead with a hatchet). Didn't even think it'd be anything more than idle curiosity when planning, and it was one of the most worthwhile thing I ended up doing over there.

Actually, there are a few Pokemon Centers, and each has it's own mascot Pokemon. So far I've been to the centers in Kyoto, Tokyo, Tokyo Odaiba Bay (they're different) and Osaka, but there are more than that, too. I purchased a few nice gifts for people and a cute Meowth keyring for myself (Meowth and Victini are best Pokemon)

And I've been to Akihabara also. You can easily spend a day going up and down the towers of anime goods, manga resellers and video game arcades. If you are so inclined, you can also visit a maid cafe there (some speak a little English). But if you want to know more, let me know. Always happy to talk about my travels :)

I believe it's just the first letter you send them!

Also where do you live in Australia? As when I lived in Adelaide I would usually get 10 (so the capped amount) of street passes just from going into the city for an hour or two. It was great as I went to the City TAFE for a while and made sure to take my DS with me each time I went.

I even saw a few Uni students playing their DS's from time to time and cursed myself for forgetting to take my DS that day! Haha

I mean I'm sure you would get nowhere near as many as Japan anywhere in Australia, but still.
