Villagers in the first AC game would take your bells without you having the option to refuse. It was highway robbery. I don't know the conditions for it, but I had one take 50% of the bells I was carrying.

Yeah Tangy took 80% of the bells I was carrying, which was about 100,000. (Though I'll admit my horror over the incident may have exaggerated it in my memory... but yeah it was a lot.) They don't just take them for no reason, they trick you into thinking they are going to give you a free item. Like "hey I got you this wallpaper, do you want it? Of course you do." You're there thinking HEY FREE STUFF. Then they go "alright, I'll just take 85000 bells in payment, thanks." And there goes your bells.

if I recall correctly, they can also steal items from you without any prompt. This also includes extremely rare items you may have obtained via the lottery, redd's gallery, and so forth, like Margie stealing the Lylat — an item only obtainable via winning Nook's lottery — with almost no way of getting it back.
