i don't get the same connection with marshal as i did on acnl

obviously, i know that this is a new marshal, so i have to build that friendship ladder again but what i'm saying is... i feel like smugs had the biggest change in terms of personality/dialogue.

he (i guess smugs) seem so superficial now. originally, smugs are supposed to be "very polite, kind, and gentleman-like" instead i feel like he's just obsessed with fame, fancy high-end stuff (not the geeky kind of interest) and treats me like a fan. fyi, my character's a guy so i'm not sure if that changes the conversations, but he never flirts lol. every time i talk to him he's like "oh, here you are again". others don't get that annoyed aside from the uchi's. the other day he got sick of me and said that's it i'm getting a publicist, it was pretty funny though. can't hate him.

i have another smug (raymond) but his sub-type is different. i notice he isn't similar to marshal. i was not expecting anything from him tbh, he was not really my dreamie so i'm surprised that i ended up liking chatting with him compared to marshal. idk.

i actually read someone here say the same thing weeks ago, i thought they were just tripping, but i saw the changes they were talking about.

It's sad when you don't vibe with your old favourites, isn't it? I had the same thing with Agents S.. NH's peppy personality doesn't suit her at all (it's also all about fame and being a pop start, etc. etc.). But maybe you will get used to it and will like Marshal all the same!

Lucha is my smug and my character is male / presents as male and when I had a thunderstorm, he told me I could leap into his arms if I got scared and then he grinned-smirked.

Definitely a flirt.

What's more, he gave me a pair of lace shorts later that same day. Probably a matter of hilarious coincidence!

I'm building up my island for KK to come over and my residents have been giving me gifts for the island.

When Lucha wanted to gift me, I had a full inventory. After I dropped an item and talked with him again, he gave me lace shorts.

you're probably right. i'm just gonna plant this background story in my head that he's upset that i gave him away (before re-inviting him again via amiibo) so that's why he's being a bit cold towards me ahahahah. guess i'm just gonna keep giving him stuff.

Its so weird with smugs, because I had Keaton as my first smug and he is honestly a doll from the start and never made any comments about being famous or acting or anything like I've seen other people's do, and then I got Raymond recently and he talks like your Marshal does (except with flirting because i'm a girl, which Keaton doesn't flirt with me??)! I don't mind it but it is quite a difference from the NL smug, which Keaton seems a lot more like a NL smug personality. I loved Marshal so its a pity that he's so different hopefully with friendship things change and he's back to him old self!

this is funny because my smugs on new leaf are marshal AND keaton, and i enjoyed their company so much. i have never let them go. probably two of my favorite villagers from my old town </3

I really liked the smug villagers in NL, but I'm sorta worried that the changes in NH will change that.

I also miss how flirty and flowery smug villagers would talk towards the player, whether in letters or verbally! I always found it so cute and flattering! I've got Keaton on my island right now, and even though we're not close friends yet, I hope he hasn't changed too much from when I had him in my town. ;;

I second him changing with friendship. He gets a lot sweeter and funnier too. Although, I’d say the smugs in NH are a lot like male peppys but I enjoy their aspiring actor writing screenplays they’ll never finish characterization lol. The

imagine if you have 2 peppies and 2 smugs? overkill!! like calm down, enjoy your island getaway....

I forgot to add that at least where Lucha is concerned (at least, on my island), he does give off an overall more gentlemanly and mature vibe and he seems to be polite with everyone despite being smug.

He may not overtly show it in every interaction, but when I gift him things, he tends to be more serious about gifting me back compared to the others. His conversational tone is of the "It's right thing to do, and I must do it back" sort with a touch of "It's the classy thing to do and it's my code of honor".

In real life, he'd be the neighbor who would immediately return your favor - even if you weren't particularly close.

I definitely agree that he's a bit wrapped up in his personal image - he is the most concerned about his own personal image second to Sprinkle - and yes, if I bug him too much, he'll mention a publicist.

In regards to his behaviors on my island,
he has a realistic take-it-as-it-comes attitude and is the most likely to wander around and have more "thoughtful" comments about island life and even the weather.

Edit: I wasn't the most thrilled about getting Lucha because my friend got him as well for their 6th, but now I'm really glad to have him on my island.

I had Marshal and Shep on my island, who are both 'smug' personality types.

For some reason, Shep became a firm favourite whereas Marshal didn't and I let him leave.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but Marshal just seemed 'cold' to me, whereas Shep is a total dude.

I adore my two smugs, Julian and Pietro, endlessly with my entire heart. I think their dialogue is so cute and I seem to be in the minority for loving their flirty undertones and their fanciness lol. they're called "smug" and I feel like they definitely come across as smug to me.

also, I believe different subtypes only kick in when you have high friendship? not entirely sure there but that's what I've seen

I get how you feel tho. I worshipped Kiki in new leaf and I do love her in NH, but the spark is gone honestly. I decided to let somebody adopt her and move on. the fact that I'm not a fan of normals in this game (I've honestly forgotten what they're like in NL lol) probably contributed to that. they're one of my least favourite personalities.
I have plenty of new favourites in this game though!

Was reading through the comments of this thread and I have to agree that the smug types in NH seems different than NL. In NL, I had Shep as my smug and he was like a chill, cool dude who had my back. I liked him a lot. Now in NH, I have Marshal and he doesn't give off that same vibe. He really does seem like a 2nd peppy lol, which is slightly disappointing but I still like him because he is always singing all the time. He is the only one sings everday and I have never seen my peppy since once so yeah, to me, Marshal really is my 2nd peppy XD Uchis also seem to have changed in this game. NL, I loveeed Pashmina. She was always so kind yet firm. I really felt like she was a big sis. Now in NH, I had Fuschia...i had to let her go. She was more cranky than my cranky. I felt like she hated me The uchis seem so mean lol. I am thinking about getting Cherry as her replacement. Hopefully I like Cherry more!

basically, because i moved him out and he moved back in, so i forgot how long it was. probably that does affect it, because i feel like he's been on my island long enough but then again not really. i do give gifts to everyone everyday though.

what i gathered from this thread though is that some do feel the same way & some don't. so, i feel like it depends on what conversation you get from them. weirdly, some doesn't get that superficial vibe from smugs, but some do get that cold side of them.

I kind of feel like a person's impression on a character can potentially be highly dependent on which conversations / sayings get triggered and in what order. Also, what general behaviors are observed and in what order.

I can definitely say that the thunderstorm incident was the main trigger that caused me to warm up to Lucha more.

When he was first at my campsite, I got a little annoyed when he puffed himself up which brought out his superficial qualities to the forefront.

Not necessarily a great thing for me, since I already have Sprinkle who goes on and on about being a popstar someday (love her, but geez!).

But after he was on my island and also because my friend has him, I thought that I might as well give him a chance.

I happened to have some extra sporty stuff in my inventory and since I've given my jock so much of it already, I decided to gift Lucha.

He really liked my present and acted more humbly about it and himself and that made me go, "Okay, maybe this will work."

After that, he showed me more "positive" and less shallow behaviors, but of course, he's also still self centered.

And finally, I saw the flirty + knight in shining armor (except not, he was joking lol) during the thunderstorm.

Edit: I can say that if I hadn't observed and experienced what I had and in the order described, I very well might feel less positively about him (and smug villagers in general).
