i don't get the same connection with marshal as i did on acnl

I kind of feel like a person's impression on a character can potentially be highly dependent on which conversations / sayings get triggered and in what order. Also, what general behaviors are observed and in what order.

I can definitely say that the thunderstorm incident was the main trigger that caused me to warm up to Lucha more.

When he was first at my campsite, I got a little annoyed when he puffed himself up which brought out his superficial qualities to the forefront.

Not necessarily a great thing for me, since I already have Sprinkle who goes on and on about being a popstar someday (love her, but geez!).

But after he was on my island and also because my friend has him, I thought that I might as well give him a chance.

I happened to have some extra sporty stuff in my inventory and since I've given my jock so much of it already, I decided to gift Lucha.

He really liked my present and acted more humbly about it and himself and that made me go, "Okay, maybe this will work."

After that, he showed me more "positive" and less shallow behaviors, but of course, he's also still self centered.

And finally, I saw the flirty + knight in shining armor (except not, he was joking lol) during the thunderstorm.

Edit: I can say that if I hadn't observed and experienced what I had and in the order described, I very well might feel less positively about him (and smug villagers in general).

yes i get what you mean, the impression would be dependent on that. as it is random no matter how you put it, and we all have to build the friendship with them. i guess it also factors in that i knew marshal, while i don’t know raymond so i’m not expecting anything from him. generally though, i know smugs could be conceited. but i guess the exaggeration of it, while other personalities seemed to be more toned down, put me off.

For myself, I had no / have no prior experience with how a smug character has acted in the past, but I also found the conceitedness off-putting.

Then again, I'm also not fond of certain behaviors and traits in real life, either.

But at this point, I kind of figure that since I like Lucha otherwise, I'm happy to have him.

If he becomes any more self centered, though...

i know right? i'm like, if you keep treating me like a fan we're gonna have a problem here.... yes i bought your amiibo but calm down lol
smugs in the past were generally uppity and refined, but they are more friendly and flirty than the snooties. with a hidden geek side, talking about trains and bands. their dialog did get repetitive on new leaf though.

one of the things i noticed on new horizons, is that the friendship level doesn't change some of the dialogues. someone had said, their uchi villager is basically on the high level friendship already and yet they still say that "this island isn't big enough for the both of us" line which is honestly lazy for nintendo's part. i think that if you reached a certain level, it should somehow change.

Yes, I agree!

Like, geez, calm down a little! We just crossed paths and I want to say hello is all!

Makes me think they're more used to people leaving them alone than actually approaching them lol.

My uchi still says that as well and it makes me roll my eyes a bit. She also hints that she's used to people visiting her all the time.

It feels a bit lazy, I agree, and I would love if higher friendship levels would add on more varied dialogue.

Now that I think about it, I think my villager with the most varied dialogue is Rowan, my jock. Granted, it's the same topic, but it's different things about the same topic.

I had this with Filbert. He was one of my starter villagers in New Leaf and he still lives in my town almost 7yrs later, so when I came across him island hopping I invited him. We didn't click in New Horizons. I let him go when someone offered me Raddle.

Man, I had the same thing happen with Marina. I was delighted seeing her in New Horizons and reached a really high friendship with her. Except...I didn't feel like I was her friend? I ended up letting her go and feel a little sad that I didn't click with her.

That's a shame. Marshal was my exes favourite so I had a sort of bad tie to him to begin with but I was starting to warm up to him. Now I need to rethink him as a goal because part of it was how much I liked Raymond's personality T3T
