I almost had a heart attack. (PSA)

FYI, even if the game displays the autosave icon in the corner, it shouldn’t actually save until they leave or you end the session properly. My boyfriend came to my town to wish on shooting stars last week and we spent almost an hour wishing, and then I wasn’t paying attention and let my switch screen go dark, which automatically ended the session and sent him home. Not a single moment of his visit was saved despite the many autosaves during that time.

Oh! OK! Good. I guess I just manage to close down before they left. Still good outcome. As long as I never lost anything I'll take that any day.

I'm sorry this happened to you, I'm glad you were able to catch it before they left with your items!

I had this happen to me a few days ago while I was running a villager DIY giveaway, which I offered here, Nookazon and turnip.exchange. I thought I'd put all the paths up to the house so you could only access the airport and the side of my housing area with Drago's house (it didn't bother me if they got into the other houses, what could they possibly do - pick the flowers? They grow back.)

But turns out I'd missed a spot and someone got out. I was on the outside already to keep an eye on things and wasn't too far behind. Luckily, all the wanted to do was check out the cabinet in my Nook's, which is totally fine. Still, gave me a scare.

This happened to me! I had Celeste so I allowed people to come for free and it was so clear that had intended to border the town hall to keep people in to only see Celeste (I dump a lot of items on the floors so I don't want people running around). I apparently missed the area behind the town hall because I then saw someone running away. I don't know where they went but by nature I am timid so I didn't want to chase after them or tell them to come back, even though I was scared about my items being taken. They eventually came back and kept talking about how she wanted my Raymond and she took 30+ minutes when it only takes like 2 minutes to talk to Celeste. It was scary at the time to see someone run out of the intended area but now I just look back on it and laugh at how stupid I was.

And that's why I don't interact with any other AC sites, I only play with friends, and people on here.
But the worst thing people could do to my town anyways is pluck flowers, and they'll just grow back.

I feel this is only a problem on external sites like nookazon, discord, reddit, etc.

I've never blocked out any part of my town, leave tons of stuff on the ground, and have had zero problems, but I only trade and visit strangers through here.

I don't see why people trade offsite. Sure anyone can create a new account on TBT but your reputation starts to matter once you've been active for a while. In New Leaf we cared more about people running over our flowers though!

i'm so sorry this happened! ;v;
i had some similar experiences and while i generally tried to be nice to everyone, 90% of the time you get good eggs, but 10% of the time you just wind up with someone who seems really friendly over whatever means they use to contact you, when in reality they're just slimy ********. i changed my setup for my entrance by now and nobody is getting in anymore (there is literally a table blocking off the pier from the airport) to avoid things like that from happening. yeah, i get that it might be rude, but i usually explain the situation to people and they're mainly understanding. it sucks, but if people stopped acting like they just can do whatever because they're visiting my dang island, think again and get off of my property. i truly hope it'll calm down when quarantine is lifted and life returns to somewhat normal because this is just super ridiculous.

For my case, I'm the type of person who's open about options. I do risk it offsite because I'm used to having quick replies and quick trade since I'm a speed trader (and I tend to get what I want 99% of the time. 1% is things like these.) Though, I guess I might try my best to stay on-site because I have a lot of items lying around. LOL.

Welp, time to fence off the area where no one can go if I do external trades...

How do people have the courage to do this? I get anxiety just visiting someone's town or vice versa. I can't fathom taking someone else's items even if they were free, let alone stealing.

Same. I get severe anxiety if I stay for too long. Human nature really is complex. I can't even wrap around the idea of assuming I can just pick things up without asking!

I get nervous going to other people’s islands as I don’t know what to do after the trade is done...especially if I’m far from the entrance...

It boggles my mind how people think they can just take things. "Hmmm of wow, they have some iron nuggets on the floor of the highest cliff on the opposite side of the island. It must be a gift for me!" No!! I'm sorry this happened to you.

He is a scammer and liar, claiming he thought anything out there was free for taking. You don’t seem to be new to hosting so I’m sure you have very clear set guidelines. The fact that people act this way about things that don’t actually exist makes me worry about them being out in actual society.

The nerve of some people to just wander and take things really makes me not want visitors on my island when I trade. I primarily stay on TBT cause I trust people here, but stories like these just make me want to avoid trading on other sites. I'm really sorry to hear what happened to you, but thankfully you caught the person before autosave kicked in, so that person couldn't steal your items.

Yes exactly!! What a wild thought process LOL. It's so ridiculous, I honestly doubt anyone thinks this way, he/she was likely just lying because they got caught.

So sorry this happened to you OP! You would think people would see the fencing and would be like "oh, they don't want me to wander? fair enough" lmao. I had people over to stargaze the other day and fenced off my yet to be completed areas since there was nothing to see (I'm self conscious about my under-developed areas, they're overrun with flowers and weeds), but one girl found a TEENY TINY SPOT I missed and pole-vaulted to the other side of my island. I didn't have any items I was worried about so I didn't say anything, just waited for her to leave. I just assumed it would be obvious that I didn't want people going to those areas if they were fenced???
At least it was funny to watch her running around trying to find a way back to the airport. I'm hoping she realized she wasn't supposed to be over there when she saw that literally EVERYTHING was fenced except that one little spot she entered through, lol.

So sorry this happened to you! Glad you were able to boot them.

My safety rules of thumb:

- Never allow anyone to my island that isn't from TBT (or an RL friend)
- State up front what a visitor has welcome access to and what is off-limits
- Never allow more than one stranger to my island at a time
- Never leave a stranger unsupervised on my island

It sucks that it's gotta be this way for me, but until my island is better organized/developed and my fruits/flowers are less precious to me, this is the way.

This is basic manners. You see something extra that wasn't what you came for? Ask first.
