How to unlock vine and moss DIY's?

I am still looking to find moss and vines on islands that kapp'n takes you to. I have not had any luck yet but I wanted to ask if I was to buy some vines here from the stores in the nook cranny thread. Once I had touched them to put in my pocket does my character learn a diy? Or do I have to discover them myself to unlock diys?

No, the glowing moss and vine DIYs are only learned from the DIY cards found on the moss/vine Kapp'n island bottles and HHP bottles. You don't learn any from just touching the vines/moss.

Thanks for this I am assuming I have to discover an island with vines before I find the diy's on the island beach?

Not entirely sure which specific island you're referring to here, but with the vine/moss Kapp'n island, the beach bottle DIY will always be there and will always be a vine/moss DIY. With the HHP island, you are able to find vine/moss DIYs inside the beach bottle (which unlocks after doing the 5th home) without visiting the vine/moss Kapp'n island, though it's random whether or not it'll be a vine/moss DIY or just a "regular" DIY. No other islands will ever contain a vine/moss DIY in its beach bottle.

If you have the DLC and Niko has already given you one DIY, every time you go to HHP check the beaches first. There's always a message bottle lying on the beach somewhere in the same manor you get them on your own island. They'll contain a DIY from the glowing moss or vine series as well other new DIY's from time to time, I've managed to learn quite a few even though I still haven't been to the glowing moss island yet via Kapp'n's mystery island tours.
