How often do you move new villagers in? (Normal town, not cycling town)

Hi! I've been trading Amiibo cards for a couple of months and I've gotten some villagers I'd really like to meet & have in my town for a bit. I haven't moved a lot of villagers out so far but I've been pondering starting to try moving more out to meet some fresh faces. This started me wondering how other players handled switching villagers in their towns.

In your normal town how often do you ask a new villager to move in? Once you move the villager in do you try to keep them long enough to build your friendship & get their picture? If not, how long do you generally have them living in your town? I'd really love to hear what you all do with your villagers.

Also are there any built in time restrictions on how quickly we can rotate villagers in/out?

I'm a chicken so I don't TT. I don't know if that would matter in a normal town but I figured I should mention it.

Thanks!

i don’t TT in pinemead so you’re the only chicken
as i’m the magicalest donkey there has been to ever walk the earth

but whenever i get a dreamie i don’t plan on ever moving them out (unless i find a cuter villager lol)
i move in a villager whenever any other villager leaves, so i don’t get a random one from the dark depths of the void
there’s a 16 villager cycle, so if you move a villager out and want them back - you would need to get another 15 villagers before you can get them back into your town. (i don’t know if it applies to amiibo’s/scanning in) - sorry if you already knew xd

I knew about the Void and the 16 villager cycle but thank you for the information anyway.

I figured most people wouldn't move dreamies out so I was looking more to see how often people switched out their other villagers to meet new ones. I would be moving villagers in with amiibo cards as I always have 10 villagers.

I move them out pretty frequently, actually! I like meeting new characters, and I keep them as long as I feel happy with their presence in my town. So sometimes I am happy with all my villagers and won't move any out for a long while. Sometimes I will still love a villager, but haven't interacted with them much recently or their interactions have gotten kind of boring when I do, and I'll replace them with someone else (sometimes with intention of moving them back in at another time or to a side town I have). Other times I'll get a new amiibo card and I just really want that certain villager in my main town, so I'll choose someone to move out. Then other times, I'll like a character but not like where they moved their house really for whatever reason, so I'll just replace them. Recently I've been moving my characters a lot, because I'm trying to find a combination I'm happy with, and get their houses in places I like. Once I find a good combo, I'll probably not move them for a long long while. I do time travel, but I don't plot reset because I find it too much of a hassle, and so scanning in Amiibos is kind of like my version of plot resetting too. haha

Thank you for replying! I like the method of moving villagers out if I'm not interacting with them. The villagers I like I make sure to talk to so if I'm not seeking someone out maybe it's time for them to move on. I've never tried plot resetting but it does seem to sound like quite a bit of work.

(P.S. I love your avatar & Mayor Adelaide! My hubby, son & I all watched Over the Garden Wall together when it first aired. We LOVED it! I've since bought the DVD and we watched it on Halloween. :) )

I do it seasonally. I have a bunch of my favourites' amiibo cards so I rotate them. For example, for summer I have a dog town. For autumn, I'll probably change to a bear town, maybe have a deer or wolf town for winter. For spring I try some new faces. ;)

Once I get the last 4 villagers I want, probably never. At least not intentionally. Maybe one day I'll get bored and end up moving one out. I guess I just have to wait and see.

Over the course of all of the years since New Leaf was released, I have been undertaking a mission to acquire as many of my dream villagers that fit the town themes I've set up as possible. The reason it has been taking so long is that I often take breaks which can span many months after binge playing for a while. Thankfully, this is approaching its climax as there are only a few more villagers I need to adopt for my towns to be complete, at least in that specific regard. Due to my irregular playing schedule, I can't exactly say it's a common occurrence, but when I do play it tends to be a regular thing that I try to do.

This objective of mine of course means that once I acquire the villagers in question, they're intended to be permanent residents. If I finally finish this longstanding goal, then that would hopefully mean there would never be any new villagers flowing into the towns. Any dream villagers who didn't fit in any of the New Leaf towns are villagers who I would be interested in acquiring in the next main series installment, presumably on the Switch.

As MapleSilver mentioned, boredom can become a concern with this. That said, there are other games to play and other things to do with my time so I could just take one of my breaks and return. Or I might switch a villager out for a different dream villager. It all really depends.

Finally, tangentially related due to the last sentences of your post, considering all of the above I can't imagine trying what I've been doing in a non-time travel manner. I'm a time travel player (and have been since the GameCube game) and as long as you don't skip days while time travelling, talk to all of your villagers and keep an eye on moving rumors or pings then there is nothing to fear. I can play numerous in-game days in one real day and am always on the lookout and never have unexpected moveouts.

Wow! This is brillant! Do you replace all 10 villagers each season or are there a couple "year round" residents? I really like this idea! Thank you so much for sharing!

Are you rotating out villagers while you're trying to get the last 4 you want?

I've been playing NL for less than a year & so far I only have the one town. I would some day like to have multiple towns.

I can see how having played for so many years you'd need to take breaks. It's quite impressive that you've been working on finding the perfect villagers for your towns. After all the energy you'll have put in, I wouldn't want you to move any of your villagers out. Your towns will be perfect.

I am concerned about boredom setting in. I'm hoping that by starting to switch villagers I can keep my interest peaked for a long time. I also play other games to help keep my mind active.

Rationally I know TTing is basically safe if you're careful but for some reason I just can't bring myself to try. I'm embarrassed to admit that I get the shakes & feel queasy just changing the time on the 3DS for daylight savings time. I don't know what I'm so anxious about or why I'm so anxious. I have had people get mad at me for "being silly" for not TTing. I'm not one of those players who is against others TTing or TTing at all. It's just a personal quirk for me.

No, I play without TTing so it takes a while to get them.

I understand. I don't TT myself so I understand how some things are time consuming.

I very infrequently move villagers in and out, but then again, I have many, many, MANY towns.

Yeah, exactly! If I'm not interacting with them much, then I don't see the point in keeping them around, honestly. I'd rather move in someone I'll talk to more.

Thank you! I adore OTGW! I think it's probably my favorite cartoon, and I like watching it on Halloween as well. I didn't see it until a couple years ago, my fianc? is the one who told me to watch it. haha I was so sad it was only one short season (I wasn't aware it was a miniseries when I started it), but I think that has something to do with it being so well done.
