How exactly does weeding day work?

So I've got the topiaries, and i can get the four items available from alternate characters.. But how exactly do i get the other eight items? I know i need to go into another town - do i get a piece of furniture for every certain amount of weeds i pick? Or do i have to go into eight towns and fully weed each one to get one piece of furniture from each? Thanks for any help!

You go to another persons town & every 30 weeds you pick, Leif gives you an item. c:
