So I've never really focused on landscaping in regards to the placement of villagers' houses, but I recently visited a town where they were all lined up quite neatly. So: how do you do it? Do you put PWP in the way? Is there some way to determine where houses will and will not spawn?

After the update, villagers won't move on paths. Cover your town with paths and leave a 3x3 foot spot where you want villagers to move.

that's not true.
i have the newest update, and Rhonda still moved in a batch of flowers, shrubs, bamboo and paths..

and i have a 3x3 plot open for villagers...

@Lunarinterlude

just start with a secondairy character.
if the villager has his/her plot in a place that is acceptable to you, you just follow the procedure untill you can save.
hit save and quit and start with your mayor character and the plot of the villager that's going to move in is in the same place as you wanted it to be

ah yes!
this method works too, but for me, none of my villagers have EVER moved on any of the paths i've set down, like they would all the time before the update, so you should experiment yourself with putting patterns down, @ lunarinterlude :D

I'll try both of these! Thank you :)

Yeah, they sometimes find a spot that you missed when putting down paths and plot there. That why plot resetting is important too. But no, if your entire town is covered in paths and you leave a 3x3 spot open, they will plot there. And not on your bushes or flowers. What I said was true. They do not move onto paths as long as you have a spot open for them or you miss a miss a spot.

That is true, I had a 3x3 spot ready for one of my villagers to move in and I also had started laying out/planting trees and shrubs for my campsite area. I missed a few spots and I don't know how but a villager moved right in where I had planted things. It's really important to cover everything

I put PWP and patterns EVERYWHERE and it worked like a charm! I covered my destined spot with paths around the 3x3 and doorway, but put a few extra spots just in case. Although let me tell you there was this ONE TIME where one of my final dreamies moved onto the patterns. It was for 2 houses but I guess they both were too close to the cliff. Nevertheless I am satisfied about where all 10 houses are now. :)

They move onto mine, and I have patterned my whole town with a few 3x3's in places where houses have been previously plotted. They ignore those and move onto patterns.

I should've done this sooner! Lucky moved near my house and destroyed my bushes!
So much for his name...

The pattern trick has worked for me so far. I have my entire town covered in patterns, except for the spots that I want them to live on and I haven't had one move where they weren't supposed to be.

Yes fill your town full of pathway tiles to get your villager in. Leave the 3X3 area open where you want the villagers to move in.
Make sure that the house can go there. I've watch a streamer who placed a one tile spot between the house and a PWP. The villager will than plot their houses on a tile. You need two spaces between a house, PWP or building.

You could test a PWP that is the same size as a house to make sure it can be place in that spot. If it goes in than cancel the PWP. If not move your tiles.

You can use the PWP fence to test if the Caf? PWP can go in the spot you want. If it works you can build it or just use tiles to save the spot.

They won't move on top of paths and where the flowers, trees, and bushes are if you cover or surround them with paths. You don't have to necessarily pick everything up or destroy them. Just make sure not to leave any space that would equal to 3x3 if you don't want them to move on there. If you're aware of the right spacing as well as the acre limit, they'd surely move where you want them to be.

I was able to perfectly lined them up and that was the time when I only had a few PWPs (less than 10) but not once I saw them plotting their houses where the paths are. I did plot resetting at first, to be safe and also because there are specific areas like where the previous starting villagers were that I don't want the new villagers to move into. I don't do plot resetting now though. If I want to replace them, I'd just cover every possible 3x3 spots the day before someone moves then just leave that one (same) spot for the new villager.

This and/or plot restting if you want to end up ripping all your hair out and throwing your ds against the wall lol! No but seriously, these are the best ways to do it imo.

Hi, so I'm wondering, do people mean paths as in patterns or paths including flowers, bushes and trees?

If people mean patterns, would laying down patterns all around town and leaving a 3x3 spot before a villager moves in the next day work?

Paths as in designs/patterns. Yes, you have to put them on the ground.
