I find planning house exteriors really confusing and difficult, so I was wondering what methods other people use!

Whatever matches my theme or looks best thats in the shop currently
I rarely visit after all lol

i just buy parts i like until its organized into something nice, but if im really unsure ill take a picture and put it side by side to my current exterior setup

I guess it's kind of easy for me because my characters are usually themed. For example, Cinderella has blue extriors, Snow White has cabin, My honey bee has a yellow and black exterior, etc, etc. My new town has Anne of Green Gables and I googled her house and was able to match it pretty well.

Have you seen certain ones that you really liked ? I personally like the cabin look, and there's a light pink one I like a lot too. The yellow with the black roof is also a fave of mine.

Three of my houses are of a theme;
Mayor's house: "Mermaid" theme exteriors with castle renovation
Chloe's house: "Fairytale" theme exteriors with modern renovation
Alice's house: "Sweets" theme exteriors with zen renovation
Melody's house: Pink and white exteriors with the default house

In my second town, I just do a mixture of whatever I think looks nice. I look at all of the exteriors on the AC wikia page and write down what I think would look good together as an overall house/look.

I find this hard to plan out too. My mayor's house is just whatever I like (currently have a brown and white theme kinda going on) but my secondary characters have color motifs throughout their houses as well as their appearances, so it was easier to pick out stuff for them.

I'm the same to be honest. I tend to go with things that are obviously a set, otherwise it confuses me. Right now I've got the toy exterior/roof/door with the sweets fence, as I think it looks like toy blocks and I don't think there is an actual kiddie fence. I switch between the castle and the zen castle from time to time, right now I just have the zen one. The mermaid theme looks really nice with the normal castle design, I had that whole set before and it was lovely

With pictures from here. I try getting them out on photoshop, see if they look good together.
Since I've had HHD though I've been using this, it's much easier to see how the house will look like.

I try to weigh all of my options, I usually mix-match for a while before I find a combination I like. :)

i do the same thing, i make a very sloppy idea of what the house would look like xD i should start using HHD to check though, i actually didn't even think of doing that.

When you get the theme challenge, try getting a full set that matches the theme. I'm doign a rather difficult theme, Harmonious. The only fitting set is the Zen set. So I got that all over my house. I just need like 100k-200k points more...

When I started to play the game, I went for getting the series full and together, but after seeing the sweety exterior complete I didn't like the fence, because it seemed too gaudy compared to the rest of the house. So I changed for another that fitted better.

Nowadays I've used most of the choices and designed 16 houses without repeating a single thing, so there's no much left for me to combine. But mostly I went wit complete sets and tweaked just a little around :)
