How Do You pick your villagers?

For me I have town themes that I generally try to stick to with my villagers and (sometimes) the exteriors of their houses.

In my first town Kirkwall I have a woodsy Autumn theme and so I decided to choose villagers with more muted colours like browns and yellows and blacks. Also in the beginning I kind of only wanted villagers with yellow on their house exteriors but that rule kind of fell apart lmao. Also I have more colourful villagers like Lobo and Keaton but my general focus for Kirkwall is for it to be a cosy and fun forest town! When I started i had a strict list of dreamies to adhere to but since then things have gotten much more relaxed and I just take villagers who I think are cute :3

In my second town, Corn, I'm trying to keep to villagers that are on the spectrum of blue, pink or white because I'm filling it with flowers of the same colours.

I don't really have any theme to my town (I think the only rule is "many flowers and neatly done in default style) so I'm choosing my villagers only by looks/personality criteria - as if: do I like their looks? (Yes/No) then do I have this personality in town already? I tend to avoid jocks, as they are kinda off-putting for me with their talk about sweat, muscles etc. and I'm trying to balance villagers with having 1 snooty and 1 smug persona (I think I like smugs more actually, but snooties are prettier ;)), maybe trying to have 2 peppy (but I considering having only one as I had 3 at one time and it was mind-numbing) and rest is between normal (my favs) or cranky/lazy (hard to choose really).

I must admit I may come off as a bit shallow, as I tend to value the looks of villagers and even while having a few uglies (by some people standards) that I really love, some vilagers designs are hideous even for me (Rocket, Kid Kat, Elise, Jane, many kangaroos etc.)

I want to say I'm not too picky, but there do seem to be quite a few things that factor into whether or not I'll keep a villager.

There are the basics, like that they have to be decently cute, and I do want an even distribution of personalities, genders and species (although I currently have Portia and Walker, who are both dogs, and I might keep them both).

Then there's placement and exterior. Exterior isn't quite as important to me, and I'll let a villager stay even if their house doesn't match what I had originally planned, but I still sort of want to stick to a theme and avoid super colorful, flashy houses.

Something that might be odd is also that while I'm too lazy to keep track of my villagers' interiors, I don't like letting villagers stay who have wallpaper/flooring combos I don't like. That actually really factored into my choosing a cranky villager, since they seem to often have weird default interiors. Not a fan of run-down labs or construction sites. :/
