Of course, I determine them by their looks. There's dreamies I can't have because I try to balance my town with gender/personalities, for instance, I really like Bubbles because I remember her from GC, but I have Nibbles who was one of my original 5 so I'm stuck with her. If one moves I would have to replace it with another personality/gender by taking 5 of my fav villagers from that category (I call them villager priorities).
Whitney, Curly, Tangy, Peanut, and Kid Cat were my favorites from Wild World. Bunnie, Walt and Erik were 3 of my starter villagers and they're cool. Henry has the same birthday as me (yay finally a villager who shares my birthday) and he's cute and I like frogs. Stitches is just super really cute and I hacked him into my wild world town and broke my palm trees forever . Marina is really cute and I saw a bunch of pictures of her sitting on a toilet.
Lyman, Olaf, Sprinkle, Flurry, Queenie, Joey, and Tammy were either my original villagers or came in on their own. Punchy was a camper, Chester was from a trade.
I choose by how cute/cool they look, or if they?re a special species, like Julian is the only Unicorn, Phoebe is a Phoenix, the list goes on, looks is the only thing that?s different between the villagers pretty much.
Pretty much based on looks, bonus points for being an interesting species (Flora) or mythical creature (Drago and Julian). I tend to like more realistic colors and patterns as well, though this can be stretched: off course falcons aren't bright blue, but Pierce's general coloration is mostly accurate in contrast to say, Fuschia or Limberg. I also just really like deer, they are some of my favorite animals, so of course I had to have two. My dream villagers aren't necessarily my favorites though, as I did want to balance gender and have at least one of each personality.
Half of mine were for looks/had them before but the other half I just happen to fall in love with when they moved in naturally before I started a dream villagers list.
I first played Animal Crossing for GameCube and two of my villagers were Cookie and Mitzi which was special to me at the time because I had two dogs named Cookie and Mitsy. But now that those dogs are gone, those villagers are kinda special compared to others.
My dream villagers are based on villager pics I've seen that I thought looked cool, but mainly the many potential villagers I've met in the campsite, the coffe job, and the dream suite. The villagers are by far my favorite aspect of the game. I couldn't care less about designing clothes or paths, or making cohesively designed rooms. I haven't worn a hat or glassed in the game since I've been able to tan, and I've probably been wearing the default pants for about a month. I love the villagers. I wish the interaction options were deeper, though--like if you could play mini-games with them when they invite you over to their house, or if you could have an actual conversation. I love working in the coffee shop and out-of-towners come to visit. I love meeting the new villagers. I hate the camper games, but I love walking into the tent to meet a new potential villager. Some of them seem and look so great that I want them in my town.
I always go through and pick one villager from each personality category that looks the cutest/coolest. Then for the final two I just look and see what two are my all-time favorites (aka cutest, nicest, or someone I had in WW)
I go by species and looks. I pretty much like all the personalities.
I don't know if you can tell but I love kitties and squirrels.
The rest of my dreamies are for nostalgia, like Fang, Lolly, and Rosie I had in previous games.
