As title says, how do I keep villagers exactly the same (clothes, furniture, etc.)?

I remember a few tricks were:
1) keep no bells on you
2) fill up retail with really expensive items so the spots are taken & can't be bought up
3) have your pockets full (of what, I forgot. I think flowers?)

I still want to talk to villagers, though, to make sure they aren't moving. So I can't completely ignore them either.

If anyone could help clarify, I'd appreciate it, ty^^

I've found that sometimes it's inevitable. For instance, I have Bubbles and Ribbot in my town. Both of them have changed clothes multiple times on their own. Ribbot also somehow got a Horned Elephant that I did not give him.

Otherwise, if they ask you for furniture or bugs or clothes, you could just not give it to them. Also, if you send your villagers letters with gifts, make the gifts fruit so that they won't display them in their homes or wear them.

aw darn. I was under the impression that they only changed into or displayed things you gave them. Guess not.

Good to know about using fruits as gifts. I was worried they might display the basket LOL.

do you remember what I should fill my pockets with so they won't ask to buy anything from me?

Filling your pockets with flowers and/or sea shells is good if you want more of a chance of getting PWP requests. Because your pockets are full, they won't ask you to buy anything from them. Because your pockets are full of flowers/shells, the villagers also won't ask to buy/trade anything off of you.

ah, thanks so much! do you know if tools are ok to have in your pockets?

I think so? I'm not actually sure if they affect whether or not a villager will ask you to get something for them. I'm hesitant to say yes or no.

Can't you decline requests, that way they have nothing to request. They might, however, just tell you that you're getting a _____ without your approval or whatever, so keep a full inventory of flowers. As for the Re-Tail, fill it up with flowers so that they can't buy anything. Heck, I don't think they'll buy anything without your approval, so you might as well just out up whatever you want. As for the clothes, send them 5 of their original shirt by mail if it happens.

ah good tip about the shirt, thanks!

Suggestions:

1. Fill Re-Tail with items villager will not buy. I suggest the stuff you find from Labelle.

2. When actively playing your town, don't be at it more than 30 minutes on the outside. (It's okay if you're indoors.)

3. Fail to come up with replacement furniture with those villagers who have asked. (This includes fish.)

4. When giving presents, an ore will work. (They love them. And they never use them.) You can also send fruit in the mail. (I never see a bushel of any fruit placed on a table in any of the villager houses.)

5. Do not have anything in your pocket, while outside, that a villager can get from you which may get placed on display in his/her house. (Same suggestions made, at The Bell Tree Forums, for eliciting suggested Public Works Projects by town villagers.)

Thing is, the villagers are willing to buy flowers that are displayed in the Re-Tail Shop. And they will display flowers at home.

There isn't really a guaranteed way to keep villagers in their original clothing. One may have a better shot with the villager houses.

One thing that needs to be suggested is this: When one starts a town, and is in the clear for building a house [tent], go to The Able Sisters and use your starting designs to take away those shirts on display in the shop. I will set up different colors. Then, when Mabel asks for what type of display, I will avoid the shirt and tell her to display the designs as umbrellas. By doing this, you can avoid seeing a villager donning that ducky design. (I think people know this. But, when beginning a town, it's easy to forget.)

If they're really willing to, and my assumption of "they won't buy anything unless they're in the shop and blah blah blah", then you can just put down flowers for a value greater then 10000. I know that they won't buy anything above that price for a fact, you don't need to buy out the stock of LaBelle.

you can't. they will interact with other villagers and put stuff in retail. changing shirts, catchphrases, and furniture can happen even if you don't talk to them.

I often send them a sheet or two of paper as a gift. It's cheap and it's never displayed in their homes. Sometimes they'll even use the paper when sending a reply letter. :)

I put them at 99,999, guess I overkilled it lol.

ty! so helpful. I just copied and pasted this into my phone/reminders :]

You can always have the prices at Retail super high so they won't ever buy any of the items. They will commonly change clothes, catchphrases etc when talking with fellow villagers. I wouldn't deliver any gifts between villagers or give them any furniture/clothing yourself. Furniture is probably easier than clothing to control. If they change to a custom design you can always report them to Isabelle and they should change into an in-game shirt.
