How do I find my friend code/add friends?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but I can't figure it out and it's bothering me. XP

On the 3DS menu you see when you turn it on, there's an orange smiley face on the top on the bottom screen. This is the friend menu and I shouldn't need to explain the rest.

So you don't add people in-game? At least, I don't see the smiley-face in game.

No you can't add them in-game. It's on the menu you see when you turn on the 3DS.

 

[SFFRulesOK]

In game, you will see an icon of three red "people" at the bottom of your screen. You can add them as a game friend, it will pop up on their screen that you've added them, and they can add you back. This is not the same thing as a friend code for the 3DS.
