How different are villager personalities?

Good evening you lovely people,

since this is my first AC game ever, there are some things I still don't really get. Even tough I put 500 hours in the game so far.
I often read villager X is so sweet and loveley, villager Y is so special and funny - but is this really a thing? I know that there are 8 different personality types, but apart from that, do villagers really act different? I mean, it cannot be true that all of the 400 or so villagers have different personas. A snooty is a snooty, right? Catchphrases are different of course, but that's it, right?

Enlighten me pleeease :-*

I think it might have to do with the personal connection people have to their villagers? For example, I have had 2 crankies on my island (Knox and Gonzo) and for some reason I think Gonzo is the sweetest, nicest lil dude but Knox drove me nuts. They do have different things that they say so maybe that plays a big role?

You're correct. It's most likely attachment over what the villagers said, or that people already like that villager. When Boyd, who is a cranky gorilla, decided to just move in on his own, I was upset. I didn't want him. I was looking for different villagers that I know about and wanted a familiar face to move in. One day I visited him and I forgot what he was talking about, but rather than thinking little of me as cranky villagers seem to do, he said something really nice. So now Boyd is one of my favorites. He's like the person who hates everybody but likes you because you're not like everybody else.

They all seem the same to me.

I haven't seen true personality traits since WW.

They’re pretty samey but as you said, it’s simply how connected the player feels to the character. For instance, Bob and Raddle are both lazy but I feel like Bob is always naruto running while Raddle is always chill

From what I remember, even in Wild World there wasn't any difference within personality types though, right? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think it's mostly just a personal connection, and then the added randomness of just when certain villagers say a certain line, what they give you as gifts, what they are doing in your town et cetera. There are so-called "hobbies" now; things that villagers prefer to do outside the house. For example, peppy Audie likes working out, unlike a lot of peppies who like fashion. I think this has been done to diversify villagers of one personality somewhat, but they're still mostly the same.

There are 2 subsets to each personality, tho all it really affects are the stories they tell you when you have i high friendship. But I agree. I have Gigi, and Soleil; both are really different.

HERE is the link to what villagers are each subset.

Huh, that's really interesting. Strange that they've decided to make that only visible when friendship levels are high enough.

Because of hobbies, two villagers of the same personality can act differently. For instance, both Rolf and Wolfgang on my island are cranky. But Rolf is into fitness, so I often see him in activewear, working out. It also seems to me that he does a whole lot more fishing than Wolfgang. Wolfgang does not work out. He's constantly reading, in many different spots all over the island.

They have different hobbies, so I might say a normal villager is "so sweet" vs another because they have the nature hobby and I always see them watering my flowers. Even though they have the same dialogue as other normal villagers.

I think that's just bias and personification. A lot of people give specific villagers more credit than is due because of their sentiments toward that particular villager. It's not that that specific villager is particularly sweeter or funnier than the other. The personalities are the only distinguishing features between villagers despite their looks, catchphrases and species. I might say that Bob is the most precious and the funniest one out of all of them, but Poncho has the same lines as he does. But I'm particularly taken with Bob, so I exaggerate the qualities about him that I like because of my preference for him.

I think that a lot of villagers of the same personality can be mostly similar, but also have things that stand out such as hobbies, quirks, and gimmicks. For instance, Apollo and Butch are both crankies on my island, but Apollo is a bit more energetic and occasionally arrogant while Butch is a bit more humble and is meant to behave like he's old. An example of gimmicks would be like how Kid Cat is a typical jock but also has a superhero gimmick, or how Stitches is a lazy but also behaves like a child because he is meant to be a child's bear. There are also hobbies, like how Rosie the peppy likes to sing and Ellie the normal likes to bake. These examples are based on my own villagers, but they are examples of how villagers stand out in their own ways even from other villagers of their personality.

BINGO.
also they have different hobbies though i don't think that would change the thing they say. aside from that, dialogue is pretty much the same tbh but it goes random so some might say something new, so it does depend on personal connection.

marshal has been a friend since new leaf, so i was pretty excited when i got him on this game too. only to be let down with how he interacted with me at the start. i feel like raymond was friendlier and a more appropriate smug, meanwhile marshal acted like a male-peppy and flat out treated me like a fan and that he'd call his publicist if i keep talking to him lol. but we've move on from that now and he's my bestie.

i'd have to say though, forgetting personal attachment aside, lazy villagers are the funniest to me. i just can't with the silly things they say. how could anyone hate such doofusness no matter which villager they've gotten 😭

It's all about imagination and personal connection! 😄 While the words may be the same for each type, how they interact with you, your island, and the other villagers can make or break how you feel about them. (At least for many players, that is. Not everyone feels connected to their villagers like that)

The coincidence of what they happen to say too you definitely goes a long way. I used to have 3 lazies on my island (Paolo, Bones, Hornsby), and there wasn't much of a difference between them. Especially Paolo and Bones, who happened to be pretty much the same in regards to hobbies and behaviour, and even had the same personality subtype. It killed my excitement to have them rather quickly.

It doesn't help that Paolo gives me the same "The best part of taking in a nap in a tree is how the tree puts you on the ground before you wake up!" line several times per week. In my head, I read it in the same tone of voice as that mocking spongebob meme now. As you can see, I can even quote it from memory at this point.

Hornsby, however, seemed a little more unique to me, since I didn't have two of his personality subtype, and probably also because my friendship level with him is higher.

I think that goes for many people, the villager you like more is the one that will have the higher friendship level, so you get slightly more and different dialogue out of that one and also more gifts etc. which only improves that villager in particular compared to others of the same personality type.

Besides hobbies and random encounters that are funny/ seem special, I think that design and animation add a lot as well. Tabby and Felicity may say the same things, but their facial expressions are so vastly different that what they say may come across differently.

Why would I post that I haven't seen true personality traits since Wild World, if I thought their personalities weren't all that different in Wild World? O_o
That was my whole point.

WW personalities were truer to their nature, and it was never dull, boring or repetitive.

Cranky was cranky but kind hearted once you learned how to answer their questions which usually involved a sliding gauge answer, so it was tricky. You could either really piss them off, or make them really happy. :)

Same with the other types.

Snooty had so much sass, now it's all "Furniture is SO important DARRRRRLING!"

:face palm:

I miss the cranky vs snooty fights.
They were hilarious!

Oh, so you were saying that in your opinion at least in Wild World they had personalities, and in New Horizons they're just all bland so the same, if I get your gist? It's not really what OP was talking about, but as someone who definitely loved Wild World the most, I agree. It has been ages since I played it, but from what I remember they did all have very strongly different personalities. Nintendo didn't seem afraid to make some types mean. Especially with my beloved crankies I've been noticing it, since New Leaf at least, I can't remember if they were different in City Folk. They just seem... too nice? With snooties I don't mind as much, as they were annoyingly angry about fashion from what I can remember haha. It seems like everyone repeats their sentences a lot more now too, so it seems more bland to me. I totally forgot about the sliding gauge thing, that was so fun!
