How did you choose your "Dreamies"?

Short answers:
- Did you scour through the lists of villagers, weighing up the personality types, house types etc? YES.
- Did you base it on the tier system? NO.
- Did you just pick villagers that looked cute/weird/ugly/whatever? KIND OF.

Longer answers:
When I first learned I was getting a 3DS (wooo, christmas gift where someone just flat out asks what you want and then buys it for you... lol) I loaded up the New Leaf wikia and looked at all the villagers by species. I decided that my favorite animals were grouped by species initially, completely forgetting about the personality bit; thankfully I went back and streamlined my standards, since I would have ended up with a load of peppies and normals if I didn't take personality type into account.

I didn't even know the tier system existed until I joined the forums here, by which time I'd already looked at the villagers by personality type instead of species and narrowed it down to like, 5 villagers per type. The only type I was really firm on was Uchi, and I wanted ONLY Pashmina (still miss her ;_; lost her TWICE) and yeah, that was based primarily on looks. I mean, I consider whether they look like they exemplify their personality type to an extent, but everyone has their own aesthetic - so to that end, yeah it definitely mattered to me whether I considered them cute :P

I still have some leeway in my dreamy list since I know sticking with the exact same villagers at all times will just make the game feel stagnant for me. But for the next few months I see myself sticking with who I have.

And during the (very painful) sixteen-villager-shuffle I did the first time I lost Pashmina, I learned which of the villagers I thought I would love just aren't for me. Merengue fell flat for me, for example, as did Margie, and I thought I would love them both to death. I also wanted Rosie but figured I'd just never get the chance to have her, since I'm only a month into playing (at the time it was only a week or so, maybe, so I didn't have much of anything to trade) but I found a very generous person who pushed her my way and confirmed my suspicions that, yeah, she's pretty much an ultimate untouchable dreamie. I love cats, I love purple, I love flowers, I love her personality. She's like the poster girl for peppies. I lost her during the shuffle and I miss her SO MUCH, ugh.

So I guess for me there are "dreamies" and then "ULTIMATE dreamies" rather than a set list that never changes. I have my own tier system...? lol.

I'm still choosing my dreamies but I just based them on their looks and personalities and how well they fit with my town atm. I didn't know of the "tier list" until I joined this forum either.

I was primarily focused on the appearance of visitors, but I also did weight out personality type when making my choices. I didn't want to hear the same dialogue over and over!!

I kind of made my own personal tier list?
Like in my head I have my own personal tier 1, tier 2, and so on villagers and mostly go from the top 2-3 tiers.

If that makes sense lol

i had at least 10 dreamies i really liked and i got my boyfriend to pick 3 of them he liked better.

The way my only dreamie treated me when I didn't know about "Dreamies"

Up until recently it was simply somebody moved I that I liked therefore I let them stay. Looking back, I went through quite a few undesirable villagers. I did go through a slight "tier phase" when I first found out about it but only because another site I use employs pretty much the same trading tiers as here. I passed out of that and am now pretty much going for villagers I think would look best in my town.

I just picked the cutest ones... which unfortunately ended up being the most popular villagers out there, so I had a hard time getting them, especially before discovering this forum. Oh, I DON'T miss the days of campsite resetting and random villager plotting.

Well I did pick some of my current villagers, the others choose to move in my town or I started with them. Three of my villagers are starters I really like, two are surprise move ins I became attached with, the next four were dreamies, I saw them in dream towns and fell for them c;
And the last one is a camper I invited to my town (my favourite villager from my Wild World town).

A few of my dreamies are villagers I've had in previous towns who I loved (Hazel, Puddles, Dotty, Marshal, Curlos). Others are ones I just think are cute or like the design of.

I picked one of every personality, and tried to keep the species of them varied (though I ended up with doubles of squirrels and frogs... they're just so cute!

Personally, I've never paid attention to their houses, or popularity outside of curiosity and seeing how hard they may be to obtain.

Benjamin & Elvis - I kept them from my original 5. I love dogs and so I just couldn't let Benjamin go no matter how many times he asks. There's just something about him. I love lions, I like the fact that he's the "king" of the jungle and his namesake is the king of rock and roll (hometown represent!). Plus he's a he's a Leo which is my sign. Benjamin also has my birthday which was an awesome coincidence.
Bianca & Whitney - Just plain awesomeness. I didn't have much of a reason besides design and personality. My mom's zodiac sign kinda has an influence for Bianca, but I mainly love white tigers in general. My room has a large banner with a white tiger leaping out at me so that's pretty cool. I also have a love for wolves/wolf-dogs such as Siberian huskies, I even have a gigantic fan in my room of a wolf pack howling at the moon so yeah I love strong and majestic looking animals lol
Cousteau - My little Frenchie. I went to France over the summer and when I came back I plot resetted Rod wrong and so I decided to go with a French jock in honor of my experience and since I needed a jock.
Pekoe - she's cute and a panda what more can I say? She also looks like Chun-Li from street fighter because of the hair.
Tia - she's a teacup elephant duh. I originally wanted to make a town that had sweets in it, then I saw everyone else do it. So I didnt want to go mainstream but I loved her too much to give her up plus a great friend of mine gave me her best villager friend. An elephants are super cool
Ken - he's a chicKEN ninja. He's also my zodiac sign and has the same name as someone I really admire. It's really funny too since he flirts and says lame jokes just as much as the actual Ken.
Walt - he looks like those old time detectives that have bandages on his face from maybe a fight and kind of that gruff look with a scruffy face. After playing the ace attorney series too I kinda compared him to Detective Gumshoe. Now if only he'll wear the trench coat design...
Frita - she's hamburgers and French fries. She's also the only other Uchi that I liked the design of besides Tammy and I needed another uchi to get pwps.

I am loving all of these answers! I guess I really should put my reasoning out there, yes?

So I don't really have "dreamies" as such.. when I started NL I wasn't on TBT and had never heard of the idea before, I didn't really know you even had a choice in what villagers moved in... but now I do, so my current villagers are:

- Bonbon. My BFF in game, one of my starters and absolutely staying for good!
- Phil. Starter, I do anticipate letting him move out, he is lovely but we're not too close.
- Cally. Starter, I adore Cally, she is always the only one out and about when I take my morning walk at 7am.
- Robin. Random plotter... is moving on the 1st and I can't wait (her plot is absolutely awful!)
- Rudy. I needed a Jock and was random plot resetting (getting Jocks because I didn't have one). Cute. Just cute.
- Marshal. Heard the hype, didn't understand it. Was offered him for free and now I adore him and he is never leaving.
- Lucky. As before, I got offered him for free and... well... Mummy dog really!
- Ankha. Moved into my cycling town and I just fell for her big time... also needed her to live next to Lucky!
- Stitches. Moved into my cycling town and I wasn't going to keep him, but damn is that little guy cute!

So I ended up with a lot of "popular" villagers, totally by accident... go figure. But my town is quite fluid, so with the exception of Bonbon and Marshal, I will probably let the others go at some point. I have recently decided that I absolutely *need* Chrissy & Francine in my town... I have Robin moving out soon, and if I can get Phil to leave I will have space for them, so that's my next plan... they are "dreamies" to me at the moment, but even so I don't think they will stay forever...

erik, deirdre and fauna: when I first saw their pictures in those scans from a jp magazine, I fell in love, specially with Erik. I could have a moose and two cute fawns in my town? hell yes. I love hoofed(?) creatures, specially moose/reindeer/deer, and they look adorable in-game. I wanted a natural-ish town since the start, so they also would fit in very well.

avery: i've had apollo in WW and CF, and loved him to bits. always made him a blue rose garden, talked with him a lot... i might've had a bit of a crush on him, i don't know, i just remember liking him a lot. while playing on NL, Avery randomly showed up in my town. He was a cranky eagle, just like Apollo, but his design just... Impressed me. He was very cool, and in a way, reminded me of my old friend, so he stayed. I was very heartbroken when he left, and I plan to find him to my new town.

o'hare: amigo!!!!!!! his jp name is Santos!!! he's a cool brazilian chocolate rabbit, it doesn't get any better. I love him so much.

blanche: her design is pretty sweet, and very elegant. I really wanted a snooty, but most of them didn't really fit in a forest (they are always so... posh? idk). blanche is very elegant but at the same time modest. she has a simple aura but still makes you want to respect her. if only her house exterior was better... but i'll live with it.

rudy: saw him for the first time also on the jp magazine scans. brown cat with a cute red button nose? are you kidding me? he looks like he jumped out of a illustration book for children! and then...

poppy: i realized that were the two villagers with red button noses. so I had to have both of them in my town. I always liked matching villagers but they are just MADE for each other. i always wanted a squirrel (natural-ish town, remember?), but didn't find any of them appealing until I met Poppy. her name is also adorable, and her house, and.... Man they got everything on her right.

coco: had her since WW. what. a. cutie. I like to imagine her as the deity that protects our town, she has a shrine and everything. her design for me is perfect (a little gyroid bunny!!!!!!!)

grizzly: he's the most recent """dreamie""". i got antonio in my town and planned to keep him, because I love him to bits and his house exterior fits everything nicely. BUT, two jocks are a little overkill, not going to lie. I've had rudy and genji on my old town and sadly I tired very easily of talking with both of them everyday. So I decided to find a substitute. I wanted a snooty or cranky, since they are the best options dialogue-wise. I love bears, and between grizzly and curt, grizzly fits my town better. (though curt's house exterior and interior are much nicer...) and from all the screenshots I saw him, he's so cool! and big! I'm excited to have him on my town~

that's it i think! i don't think i explained well everything, but then this would be even longer!

Amelia - Starter Villager. We have become quite close friends (though that subsided because I worked nowadays too much to pay attention at her), and I seem to now hold on her as my personal snooty villager. I'm planning to pair her up with Apollo once I get him (via making him plot near her house that resides in the "forest" area of my town.)

Hazel: After Pashmina leaving me twice, I decided to look for a new uchi villager to pick up. After seeing Hazel, I fell for her! She's really adorable, but also pretty quirky and fun due her personality. So it's easy for her to stick out from the crowd.

I don't understand why people need to bash character if there's not much base aside from "I don't like it". That's just an opinion, not a fact. That unibrow isn't even that crazy though, it's actually cool. I'd kill for that kinda thing.

(Also because her Japanese name was Iris, I decided to give her catchphrase "kid" after one other famous Iris)

Rosie: I had Bunnie and other peppy villagers before, but I remember wanting Rosie since Wild World. Perhaps because I keep associating her to Animal Forest: The Movie (which I really loved) and wanted to have the real thing in my town. She just kept echoing in my mind everytime I talked to other Peppies before.

Kind of baseless but that's how I feel. (I bet all others do as well)

Marshal: Not a dreamie actually, he's more like a pick-up that I fell in love with. Olaf used to be my fave but his looks combined with his smug personality made him feel rather snobby (so he was almost like male snooty villager) and after a while it didn't sit well on me remembering him. I remember people being crazy about Marshal and I wondered what was the deal, until one day I bought him from Villager Trading Plaza after making Olaf move out. Seeing him first time was witnessing cutest thing I had ever seen. But that's not it only - I love to wear Denim Vest and it matches with his Denim Jacket. His birthday is also nicely just 2 days after mine. So yeah, keeping him.

Merengue: When wondering what kind of villagers I'd want to dwell in my resort-themed town, Merengue came to mind due her cute cake-like appearance. Though paying for her was pretty hefty. But she's so adorable: K.K. Stroll is always sweet listen when coming to her house. I try to decorate her house with more food-themed stuff sometime.

Zucker: I loved Stitches back in my Wild World (and still do have him there), but I wanted to get a new kind of a lazy villager instead of getting him again. During that time I stumbled on Zucker in my campsite and really liked his appearance. So I took him in.
Cutest octopus thing and his dialogue has me smiling a lot!

Sadly he moved out once and I had to get him back through patience and spending all my TBT I had accumulated (400). Right now I want to ensure he won't go away.

Pietro: Starter Villager. I first found him kinda "boring", even if colorful, but after the time he moved out, I started to miss him. I got him back once, but I didn't ensure him not leaving in time that cost me having to get him again. Now I did, but sadly enough his balloon table has a mini dharma on it that I can't move out due being at the very corner (hmph). But he's a nice addition to my town's theme, being the one looking after the park I try to build near him and Zucker. (They live next to each other)

Genji: My fave villager back from Wild World, and happily brought back to my town in New Leaf. I liked his catchphrase back in the Wild World-times, and he just looked very original. His personality gives him rather eccentric feel too, really. I have a lot Japanese-themed furniture that I want to decorate his house to with sometime. BFF.

Apollo: I found him really cool-looking in Animal Forest: The Movie, and wondered if I'd ever see him coming to my town. Crazily enough, he sure did! He appeared in my Wild World, and was exactly what I got.

My town lacks a cranky villager still, and due me having Amelia, I wanted to pair her with Apollo. Along with that is the fact that snooty and cranky villagers get well along, which might make fun sense with pairing these two eagles. Also the aforementioned thing of moving their plots close to each other in a forest. It's perfect!

Kitt: Starter Villager.
I had Kitt as my first normal villager before, but she moved out ages ago. I really loved her and was big friends, so I really miss her nowadays. I loved how she felt like a doting mother to the son he was carrying.
Gladly enough I found out that I have space for a 10nth Villager in my town, which I'd love to reserve for Kitt, completing my list with both old and new. So here's hoping I'll find her.

I mostly picked mine because of aesthetics. I want villagers that 'fit' in my town. I'm also trying for at least one of each personality type (though I could do without any Jock villagers, to be honest.)

Goldie is my only true "dreamy" would give anything to have her in my town. I picked her because she's a dog-normal type who is most likely based on my favourite dog breed, the golden! and OFC she's so cuuuttee.

I chose dreamies based on looks and originality, also comparing their personality and species. The more unique they looked, the better. So ones like Julian, Drago, and Phoebe were no-brainers, since they're based on legendary creatures. Also, I tried getting animals I like irl and cuteness/coolness is always a bonus.

Julian: He's a unicorn. Your point is invalid.
Drago: He's a dragon. Your point is invalid.
Phoebe: She's a phoenix. Your point is invalid.
Cookie: I love the color pink, and I love dogs.
Fuchsia: I love the color, and I love deer.
Molly: She's just so tiny and cute, aaaaaaaa~
Whitney: An old favorite from WW. Also the only wolf and one of the few snooties I ever really liked.
Pierce: An old favorite from WW and CF.
Rolf: An old favorite from WW. The only tiger and one of the few crankies I like.
Pietro: HE'S A FREAKING CLOWN SHEEP. YOUR ARGUMENT IS BEYOND INVALID.

All mine are mostly appearance based, but I also like to balance out the personalities and see which villagers would be good with each other for my town. My list is always changing, i've been sticking to one lately. Which is Mira, Skye, Flora, Olivia, Roscoe, Rudy, Benjamin, Lyman, Pietro, and Avery. I'm really debating on wether I want Avery or Static though. I also try to keep the different species balanced too, try not to have more than 2 of a species.
