How close can villager houses be?

I wasn't sure and I'm plot resetting and need to know, can they be one space apart or does it have a minimum of 2?

They have a one space buffer on all sides that can never overlap, so yes, two is the minimum that can be achieved. Vertically, there have to be three space in between, as there is an extra buffer space in front of doors.

Yeah, it is at least two spaces between each house.
