Help with Wii Shop Channel

I know how 4.2 can ruin your Wii. But when I go to the Wii Shop Channel it says that there is an update for the Wii Shop Channel. But is the update version 4.2 or is it just an update just for the Wii Shop Channel?

Nintendo requires you to upgrade your system software in order for the Shop Channel to work.

There was Wiis without Homebrew that were bricked. My cousin is a victim. He got SERIOUS DEPRESSION. And I think he has suicide thoughts. I would've had suicide thoughts if that happened to me.
