As a french man, I can say to you that Europe is vast lol, like, all countries here have their own culture, identity and so... animals.
One villager could fit one country and not another but hey, my advice will be to stay away from species of animals that are too "exotic" I guess.
Species I recommend : Cat, Dog, Cow, Chicken, Bird, Bull, Duck, Frog, Goat, Sheep, Hamster, Horse, Mouse, Pig, Rabbit, Squirrel
Also okay : Bear, Cub, Deer, Eagle, Octopus, Ostrich, Wolf
No : Anteater, Alligator, Elephant, Gorilla, Hippo, Kangaroo, Koala, Lion, Monkey, Penguin, Rhino, Tiger

What do you recommend for a French villager? Also, I want the villager yards to reflect their "country" per se. For France, what do you recommend for a yard?

I think for girls, I would suggest a few dogs, like Goldie, Daisy, and Portia.
