HELP! Item from Pete?

I can never get any of the items that are handed by Pete.... is there a procedure or am I just unlucky?
I seem to have missed a few from him already...

I was on earlier in the day then turned game off. When I restarted the game and came out of house he was at my door. He'll always be at your door. Maybe you need to make sure you are in your house if you don't turn off game.

Like pumpkin pie or other Nintendo letters? Those are region bound.
He also appears at your house when you have a full mailbox (it'll blink like crazy) and mention that you should clean it out. If he had more letters for you they will be delivered at the next delivery moment.
