I?ve found the mole cricket twice on accident. Each time I?ve failed to catch it because it takes forever to switch to the net and I always miss on the one or two chances I get to swing before it disappears.
That brings up another question. Do you guys dig holes to determine where public works projects will be placed? Each time I?ve found the cricket I was with Isabelle, digging holes to determine the placement of PWP?s

I'm too lazy to hunt for bugs when I'm doing other chores, so they tend to escape me easily. But then again they always appear when I'm not ready and when I'm actually hunting for them they don't spawn :( And I've never used holes to determine PWPs. I always use patterns on the floor with a few flowers on hand to see what the PWP will look like next to different flower combos in the area.

Also, to answer the mole cricket question, I've only caught it on my 2nd file. I found it a bit harder to catch them in no path towns (my main has zero pattern paths) and also I fear accidentally digging up my flowers lol.

Here's an easy way to catch the mole cricket. Works best in developed towns.

Make it to where you net and shovel are right next to each other. Rearrange the tools in your pockets.
Place down patterns and flowers. Mole crickets won't go under them in the next few steps.
Leave the area. Maybe save and continue.
Later when you hear it, get your shovel out. Walk around until you hear I next or in front of you. This takes practice to learn where it is in the ground. Dig only when you hear it.
Start digging holes. If it isn't there, don't fill in the holes unless you need to, like of you trapped yourself. Do not erase patterns or pick up flowers.
Once you dig it up, press left or right on your arrow pad to get to your net. It should only take one time.
Chase it and viola, you now have a mole cricket.

To answer your other question, I also never use holes, I use patterns and flowers. I make an X in the middle of the pattern to make it easier to count each space.

I just used paths for public works since holes go away.

As for the mole cricket, I would always end up digging holes like crazy until I found it. Then I would keep switching areas to hear the moving sound/where it is then loudest. They are quite pesky in that aspect.

No never used holes before for PWPs!Most people just use patterns for the PWPs. And for your question I've actually caught them quite a few times somehow. It's much much easier if you just place your net and shovel by each other like others have said. Pretty much never fail to catch it after doing that!It may be hard at first but you'll eventually get the hang of it!

Yes, but it's not my favourite. I usually just dig holes untill it pops out and then hope I don't miss. Oh, I hate it when villagers ask me to catch them one. They always seem to favor it over the other bugs :[

I caught the mole cricket about a year ago, when I first started my town. My town was still very underdeveloped, but I think that probably helped me because I didn't have to worry about accidentally digging up a hybrid or something while I searched for it. I set out specifically to catch one for the museum, so I kept only my shovel and my net on me to make it easy to switch between the two. I had to do a lot of digging because my hearing isn't the best and I couldn't tell how close I was or what direction the sound was coming from, but I finally caught one. And I haven't tried to catch another one since.

As for placing PWPs, like the others have said, I mark the area with patterns rather than digging holes.

I need earphones to catch it, I also prepare my tools: the net being next to the shovel. Generally, they hide in the rare free spaces I have left.

I’ve never caught it, I’m always far too impatient to dig enough holes in order to find it haha. One day maybe!
