Half-Past Hoodwinked [Answers Posted]

The task wasn't to tell us what the message said but rather to find a specific phrase within the text. If you simply decoded the text without directly answering the question then you wouldn't have received tickets.

No offense, but it would have been really nice to know that at the beginning of the event. I decoded the first puzzle, but because I didn’t submit my answer with the exact wording that you were looking for, my guess didn’t count.

I understand that you guys have to be vague to avoid giving away unnecessary hints, but it’s frustrating to do everything right and then not earn your tickets based on a technicality.

I hope that some of these hiccups can be solved by the next fair. The events were all a lot of fun, but the complicated and sometimes confusing submissions process put a damper on some of them. Not trying to be disparaging since I know how hard all the staff worked to bring us this fair. I’m just voicing a concern and hoping that we can all have the best fairs possible in the future. :)

To submit, make a thread in the Private Contest and Event Submission board and select the “Half-past Hoodwinked” event name. Type your answer in the "Text Entry" box. The post must contain the answer to the question following each secret message. You will make a new thread for each round.

I understand this but I also don’t understand why in an event where you have to decipher something to get the answer, you wouldn’t use the exact text given to you as your answer.

Like I don’t think any of the questions were so vague they couldn’t have been answered with the exact phrase from the messages

As @Damniel pointed out above, this was disclosed at the beginning of the event.

Please do rest assured that we have been taking extensive notes on user response to all of our events and if they are brought back in future they will be adapted to reflect this.

For future, is it okay to decode the sentence with the answer or are you just looking for the key words?

I feel like the decoded message could have at least counted for something, if it was correct. Like at least 1 ticket for getting it right, then the full amount if you answered the question right too! Because it kinda sucked decoding it correctly but getting nothing :( Regardless, this was really fun! I missed the first one cuz I didn't even know this event existed. I was very overwhelmed at the beginning D:

Yeah kind of sucks spending so much time making a code and figuring out what the actual message said to get nothing. But again, it is my (and whoever else's) fault for not reading the directions thoroughly enough. I'm still pretty mad at myself for somehow skipping over that.

to be fair

This is frustrating not to be able to discuss the exact answers since the event technically isn’t closed yet, but let me give an example:

Say the question is “where can Mira buy a hat” and the exact wording in the puzzle is “The Able Sister’s” but if I answer “The Tailor Shop” then my answer doesn’t count because it’s not the exact wording, even though it’s technically the same thing. And the description to the event doesn’t say EXACT.

As for me, I read the question but misunderstood. I thought the question was just for proof you solved the code yourself or something. I didn't know there was a specific answer they were looking for until I failed it. Regardless, I thought as long as I decoded it AND provided an accurate answer, I'd get marks. But the answer was supposed to be specific I guess :(

If the text says "The Able sisters" I cannot for the life of me understand why you would answer "The Tailor Shop"

Like it's not what it said. Sure they're the same thing but it's not what it said.

Because you said it yourself: the Able Sister’s and the Tailor’s shop are one and the same. How are you supposed to know that one will not count in place of the other when people use them interchangeably all the time?

The post must contain the answer to the question following each secret message.

Where does this say exact wording is necessary? It just says to answer the question. Judging by this thread, I am not alone in understanding it this way.

The questions were worded in a way that required some reading comprehension skills to answer. Like an assignment or test in school, the goal was not to just regurgitate the exact text of the decoded message, but to demonstrate you understood what was going on in the messages. I can see how this event could be rough for people who don't speak English as their first language, but I'm sure there was a reasonable amount of leeway given for the answers. I didn't copy exact text from the messages for the first two questions, but got both answers accepted because I knew what the questions were asking for and what amount of information was necessary to completely answer the questions. There probably could be improvements for next time, but I don't think the questions were "unfair" as they were worded.

It literally gives you the answer in the text. Like you HAVE to decipher it and it gives you the answer, so I cannot understand, however much you try and justify it, why you wouldn’t just put exactly what’s written- regardless of if it says “exact” in the instructions or not.

I wouldn’t go into an exam at school and put an answer that was “similar” to the answer it gives you. It gives you the exact answer, why change it.

The only way I can justify it if the decoded message had more than one answer but it’s pretty simple what the answer would be.

You're honestly just wasting your time arguing about Question 2 and pushing to get the tickets.

Aside from that it was a fun event, so thanks staff!

I don't think there needs to be an argument. Some people misunderstood and some didn't. The staff said they're taking our concerns to heart for the next fair and we all had fun :) Yes I'm disappointed too, but at the end of the day, this fair didn't have to happen and I'm just glad it did! Both sides can learn from this so we'll have an even better time next time!

Here it is, what you’ve all been waiting for the
Answers:

Code 1: North Beach

Code 2: Flowery Painting

Code 3: Infrared laser system

I didn't get accepted for round 3 even if I included those words? :( Was the answer not supposed to be in complete sentences?

You didn't submit your answer correctly (using the Text Entry field) so your answer was not visible to us. I've manually checked it and can see that it was correct so I've now marked it as accepted for you. :)

So I knew how to decipher the first and third messages, but I never actually found out how to do the second one. Does it use the same method as the third one?
