Hajime Tabata wants to make Final Fantasy XV "more casual, one button action"

Tabata's also in pursuit of a Final Fantasy that's not as overwhelming as its predecessors, and one that can be enjoyed by a broader audience. "With Final Fantasy 15, I do want to make it more casual," he says. "Of course the depth of the game is going to be there, but I want to make it so players can easily experience the satisfaction of the depth of the game." There's an option to set that car to drive itself, allowing players to sit back and take in the sights - although there is also an option to drive it manually, should they want to engage more fully with the world.

"Another example is in the combat," explains Tabata. "With the hardware specifications of the newer consoles, it's possible to set it up so you have different enemies and different choices of attacks you can enter in, but I want to simplify that. It'll basically be a one-button action, and the AI intuitively outputs an action that kind of satisfies, gives you that instant gratification, and it connects with the simple touch of a button. I myself am not getting any younger. I don't want to be frantically pushing buttons. I also want to utilise the intelligence of the hardware spec, and not have to go through too much hassle or trouble in order to execute moves."

I have no words and there goes my interest in this game.

Oh, but he said there's a "Not Casual" option for combat. Maybe we can frantically push buttons in that mode?

Is Lightning going to be in this game?

Poor Tabata has obviously never played a game where pushing buttons makes sense.

I also want to utilise the intelligence of the hardware spec, and not have to go through too much hassle or trouble in order to execute moves.
How about we try using the player's intelli- oh wait, that's "too much hassle and trouble", provided it even exists in the first place.

Not likely, this is it's own game. Maybe a costume, but I don't think Lightning would make an appearance. Unless spin-offs or sequels, it's my understanding that each FF game is standalone. A different universe.

@OP: I don't see anything wrong with what he's saying, it's not like FFXIII wasn't that casual to begin with, it was pretty much mash X or R1 to win. Nothing wrong with one button action.

My thoughts exactly. Reading it, my mind instantly went to the Auto-Battle option from XIII and XIII-2. I quite enjoy that. Battles were sometimes tedious in older titles, and I actually appreciate the way they've toyed with the combat system in the latest games.

Don't forget how in XIII-2 for the DLC part of Lightning's Story you had to be wicked fast with those 'one button' changes to do well. It was quite a challenge, and now it's looking like a battle system where you'll have to move the character around on top of everything. Honestly, until I see how the system works I can't judge it, and Final Fantasy has -never- been a hack-and-slash action game, so it's really more than I expected to begin with.

I don't doubt for a minute that Square-Enix is taking into account what the reaction has been to this information though, considering that they need this game to do well in order to stay in business. I may just have more faith in them than a lot of people do considering battle systems though because Tabata was the one who worked on Crisis Core, which was also wicked difficult sometimes. If it plays similar to that, then I'll be pretty pleased.
