So lately I've seen a lot of posts about how to move out unwanted villagers, 10th move-ins, etc. I've done a lot of testing on this in my main town, Glendale, so I thought I'd share my findings.

Before I jump right in, there are three rules you need to know. Keep these in mind when moving villagers out.

1. Talk to every villager, besides the one(s) you're trying to move out every day. Writing letters to the ones you're keeping, and sending them presents helps, too.

2. Ignore villagers you're trying to move out, no matter what.

3. Ignore unwanted villagers when they ping you. This one is especially important because ignoring their ping ensures that they'll move without changing their mind. This works on new move-ins, 10th move-ins, and even villagers you're best friends with!

For New Move-ins:

Starting from the day they move in, completely ignore them. Don't introduce yourself, don't write them letters, don't deliver lost items to them, don't deliver packages to them for other villagers, and don't talk to them when they ping you, as I mentioned above. You'll find out if your unwanted villager is thinking about moving when you talk to the villagers you're keeping (spam chat them if you have to). If none of your villagers tell you someone is thinking about moving, even after spam chatting, then no one is thinking about moving, yet.

Contrary to popular belief, it doesn't matter if your new move-in is your 10th move-in. They can, and will move, if you ignore them from day one, and you don't have to move another villager out first!

If you neglect a villager you want to keep, while also neglecting the villager you want to move out (even if you've ignored them from day one) the villager you want to keep may think about moving and ping you. If a villager you want to keep pings you, ALWAYS TALK TO THEM and tell them not to. If you ignore a wanted villager when they ping you, they'll move, even if you're best friends.

For Move-ins You've Already Talked To and Villagers You're Best Friends With:

It takes longer for a villager to move out once you've introduced yourself, or if you're best friends with them. You may have other villagers ping you to move before your unwanted villager finally does. Keep ignoring them, and keep talking to the villagers you want to keep. Just keep in mind that once you've introduced yourself, you've begun your friendship with that villager, and thus it may take a while to get them out. You'll want to ignore their pings, as you would a villager you've never talked to. Again, ignoring them ensures they'll move, no matter how great of friends you are.

*Note: I had 3 10th villagers in a row move in, then right back out by doing what I've listed above. I also got Rosie, who had been in my town for over a year, given me her picture twice, and who had changed her mind about moving twice before (when I answered her pings) to finally move by ignoring her ping. I also got Ankha who had been in my town for around 6 months, and who had given me her picture once already, to move out by ignoring her ping.*

Time Traveling to Move Villagers Out:

Time traveling significantly speeds up the process of moving villagers out, but of course, it's not required. If you're against time traveling, simply do the steps listed above, and take things one day at a time. If you DO want to time travel to move villagers out, then I recommend doing the following:

1. Travel forward one day at a time, no more than that, to ensure that you don't lose a wanted villager.

2. On each new day you move forward, go and talk to each of the villagers you want to keep. Talk to them twice at the very least (I personally talk to them 5 or 6 times because I have a greater chance of figuring out who is thinking of moving). If you can't find a villager you want to keep, try going inside a building, and searching the town again, making sure to check your beaches. If that doesn't work, save and quit, and try again without moving forward a day. Remember that if you neglect a wanted villager, then they may ping you to move instead of your unwanted villager, which prolongs the process of getting them out.

*Note: Villagers will still think about moving/ping you to move/actually move out even if another villager is sick. I saw a few posts a while back asking if villagers would move when someone was sick, so I thought I should include that.*

If I've missed anything, feel free to make a note below, but don't include anything you haven't tested or experienced yourself! Hope this is helpful :3

Very nice guide :)

I just wanted to say something, because I once had this villager I wanted to move out and I ignored him for months. He didn't move away. Then once I accidentally talked to him and it introduced me because I never talked to him before, and after that he moved out. I'm not sure if you have to introduce yourself, but it worked for me.

It may have been because you neglected other villagers while ignoring the one you mentioned. Consistently talking to villagers you like is important because it keeps your friendship level with them high, while keeping the unwanted villager's friendship level low or non-existent.

Thanks for the guide! I have some villagers that asked to move even though there was one villager who asked to move the day before, is that common? Or they dislike my town xD I wish there was an option to stop moves outs/in!

I've had a few villagers ask to move the day after I asked another villager to stay, but I don't think I've ever had a villager ask to move after another villager just moved. So I'd say it's somewhat common :3

Thanks! If I stopped a villagers from moving when they pinged to move, could I not play the game for about eight months and once I can play again I could boot up my game and time travel back to the last time I played and my villagers would still be there? D;

I'm afraid that's something I haven't tested xD lol but in my experience, you don't lose anything if you make sure to go back to the last day you played. I don't typically take breaks for longer than a week, though, so I don't know how traveling back 8 months would go. Plus it would be pretty tedious to travel forward one or two days at a time to get back to the actual date.

I'd recommend you just check in once a week or so to catch up, rather than waiting 8 months, unless there's a specific reason you can't play for that amount of time.

Sounds good~ Thanks for your help! I tend to get paranoid when villagers don't ping about moving within 3-4 days or so

Great guide! One time, in city folk, there was a villager I hated (Forget who...) and I did everything to get her out, she was there for forever. It was so annoying, I even "Reported" her at the town hall thing, still didn't work. I never talked to her, even when she pinged, it was terrible. But those were the days of city folk, New leaf is better.

Good guide. I'll add it to my guide list. I'll add that it's safe to jump 4 days ahead after you deny a move out request (or if you are 100% sure no one is thinking about moving) since another villager won't ping until at least the next day and won't move out until 5 days after that. That speeds up the process instead of going day by day.

Great guide. I remember when I wanted Cezar to move out so badly, I hit him with every miscellaneous object, planted many seeds so he'd fall in, constantly bug him, report him 20 times a day, shovel around him so he can't get out, everything. Unfortunately, he didn't move out. And once he pinged me to move, I was so excited. But no, when I said it was okay for him to move he decided to stay. I was so mad, I did everything x2 to try to get him to move. Finally, he decided to move. I was so happy. TT a couple months forward, I see him on Main Street. I talk to him, for old times sake, ya know, hitting up a convo. AND THEN HE DECIDES TO MOVE BACK IN. And the salt flows like the waterfalls in my town. In fact, he moved in right on top of my perfect apple orchard. And that's the story of Cezar, the most idiotic villager of all time.

Thanks for the guide Mi, i really have trouble getting rid of Elmer and Renee(cycling town).
