So I don't know a whole lot about computers but I am looking to buy a nice laptop to play games on and need advice. I need to to be able to play Skyrim, and perhaps Elder Scrolls Online, as well as Guild Wars and other online MMO's. I want it to also have a nice big screen because my eyes are awful and I want to be able to see all the awesome graphics without compromising play.

I want to start narrowing it down NOW so that maybe on Black Friday I might be able to nab one for a cheaper price. My boyfriend and I are planning on splitting the cost so we can get a better one and share it, we already have a desktop that we use for the internet as well as our phones so this laptop will be mostly for JUST gaming.

If you have experience gaming and with computers please make some suggestions for me so I don't end up buying something I later regret. =D

I strongly suggest getting a Desktop instead of a Laptop for gaming, unless you go around a lot. See, with portability comes a lack of space for your components, which results in lesser air circulation, parts heating up and inevitably it results in slowdowns eventually. Which means if you get a Desktop with the exact same configuration as the Laptop you choose, the Desktop will be marginally faster than the Laptop. Though again, like I said it all comes down to convenience.

Since you asked for Laptops and you don't want to play too many heavy games, all you need is a decently fast processor(something like an Intel i5 650 @3.20 GHz or an i7 or whatever), a 2 GB GPU(Preferably Nvidia due to increased support/stability of games for it), decent RAM(8 GB is perfect), and a decent enough display. Now since I'm not from the US, I used BestBuy for reference. I've filtered what kind of laptops that'd be best for you here, let me know your thoughts.

A Star Wars one however caught my eye, it's the perfect laptop you could ask for.

you don't really need 3+ gHz unless you're gonna play AAA titles when they come out. But I have an asus and it's been working for 2+ years. But then the heaviest I play(ed) is/was SKyrim, Civ V, Sunset and a few others

I'd have to agree with Moko. Buy an Asus computer! They're great gaming laptops! Try to buy the most popular brand laptops. Don't buy a cheap gaming laptop because they might have terrible cooling systems.... (I had this problem...)

Yeah, I definitely know that desktops are far better for gaming but I'm looking for something I can take places because I intend to game with friends and it will be nice to carry it around and over to where we hang out so we can be dweebs together. Do you know if best buy has good sales for black friday? Cause if so I will definitely get one there, they all seem like good contenders, but I do wish there were more larger screened ones.

One of my friends suggested Lenovo as well, he says he plays lots of games on it and it has never over-heated on him, but that he'll take a break when it gets too hot.

Yeah this, or get usb-cooling fan and dust spray so you can clean it once in a while.

get an alienware

Let's see...

3DS
Vita
Wii
Wii U
PS3
PS4
Xbox 360
Xbox One

All of them are infinitely better than a "gaming" laptop and are easily portable, especially the 3DS and Vita. Also you aren't going to have a nice big screen with any laptop.

get an alienware

Only if you want her to pay 6 times the amount it's really worth.
Alienware is super-overpriced garbage.

except lots of games are not available on consoles, assuming that's the reason they wanted the laptop in the first place

Well, if you wait until cyber monday, you can probably get insane deals for things. ( timing is best though, I had a friend who hunted around a year or 2 for his pc built it was 1200 and its a medium/high end pc gaming )
I've seen pc's built for around 1000 that medinum/highend
and i've seen some nice pcs- Medium pc/ probably equivalent to a 2k normal price built for 600ish
timing is key, but they're people who can get you the best pc for your price range

Make sure to replace the thermal compound in your gaming laptops since factory ones are really, really bad. My ASUS ROG laptop started having heating issues after 3 years on games I was able to play during the first or second year. Turned out the compound was brick-hard! I had to run FF14 on low settings and even then it was clocking at 90C, but after I replaced the compound I was able to run it on Ultra at 45-50C depending on the ambient temperature. Pretty good for a 3 year old laptop haha.

Don't forget to buy a USB cooling unit to put under your laptop since gaming laptops generate a lot of heat.

arent laptops pretty awful for taking apart, and wont u void ur warranty by doing that

It's definitely more difficult to take apart than your PC, but doable. I take mine apart once a year to clean up dust and check if the thermal compound is still tacky. Laptop warranties usually are around 1 year unless you purchase an extended warranty from the seller or the manufacturer, so it wouldn't matter after that.

whats ur price range

ur not gonna get a good gaming laptop for cheap tbh
but really if ur just gonna play skyrim or something you probably wont need much. unless you wanna play like, triple AAA games at like 60 fps and super high graphics. it depends i guess on really how much ur willing to spend + what you want to play

This.
I built my Sager laptop over at xoticpc but they also have some pretty good sales on pre-built ones. Also, i have an Alienware that i use regularly for dual gaming (aka afking in one game while playing another xD). Despite what some or even most people say about the brand, i enjoy mine a lot and have ran into no problems whatsoever. I do agree that they are overpriced but i received mine as a gift.
