Golden watering can turning silver glitch?

I never, ever swap out my tools, and I loaded my mayor to find out they were holding the silver watering can instead of the golden one...And checking my inventory brings up nothing. I have the perfect town status. My first thought was that maybe it turned silver if you didn't have the perfect town status, but I don't believe that's the case.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I've never seen a glitch in this game, and well! This is a pretty unfortunate one if you ask me.

Did you collect the gold one from town hall by talking to Isabelle? I never heard of it changing like that, once you get the gold one it should stay gold...?
