Hey everyone! I'm coming to you all today to ask for help making some steps toward identifying the function of sub-personalities in ACNH.

If you haven't heard already, the companion guide states that “each resident can have one of eight personality types, each with two sub-types” (page 74), but it doesn't elaborate on what the sub-types are or how they work. Some players have reported dialogue differences between villagers, but as of yet, we have no way to verify this either way.

As a preliminary test, we decided to come to the community and ask that when you go to a Nook Miles mystery island with a lazy villager present, you talk to that villager and fill out the form:

The form is two questions long and asks you to check which villager you met and which dialogue options the villager used when you spoke to them.

We hope this data will allow us to identify what attribute of the NPC parameters defines a sub-type or sub-personality. If this data is promising, we can scale up the testing and work on straightening out all of the sub-personalities.

For more information on what we're looking at, check out the data here:

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please ask! In order to get solid, reliable data, we're going to need a lot of responses, which is a tough hurdle to cross.

This is a great idea, will definitely come back to it next time i go island hopping. I hope we can soon get some research going for the other personalities, too.

Oh man, I'm so interested in this. Unfortunately I won't be able to help in the immediate future because I just had a villager move out, and probably won't have another one ping for a while. Still, I'm excited to see what the data shows!

Went to 1 island today and ran into sherb, filled out your form! Sorry I forgot to select his initial dialogue on the form, it was the one that began with "ahh! Theres someone on this island!"

Thank you so much! Keep in mind that you can edit your submission after you submit it. There's a link on the landing page after you complete the form.

Is the dialogue option you meant "There's someone on this island! You're here visiting too?! I'm VILLAGER. You're NAME from ISLAND? Neat! I didn't expect to make a friend here! This island is so cool, ."?

As soon as we know what variable reflects the sub-personality, we can get started on the other personalities! Hang tight!

I unfortunately exited the page after i submitted so i cant edit it anymore :( but yes thats the dialogue!

This is super interesting! I cannot wait to see more results and learn more things about the subtypes

Really interesting stuff! I tend to island hop for diys rather than villagers but my smug just moved out today so I'll be getting islanders anyway, I'll be sure to submit the data for you!

In the interest of maximising, would you also be interested in the dialogue from other villager personalities? I know the focus is lazys for now but I could just note it in a thread reply and it could be used in the future if this turns out to be useful.

That'd be great! Thank you so much!

If you'd like to record the dialogue from other personality types, you can, but it's not completely necessary. There's no telling whether or not this method will resolve in anything, so focusing on the lazy villagers is totally fine. In the event this does work, though, we can absolutely use your data from other types. No promises on functionality. :)

Fascinating!
Is the "Talk Type" number what we're trying to attribute actual qualities and definable substance to?
Also, are these differences (a 1 vs a 0) confirmed via the game's code?

Maybe this can help you? https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...I6el2mmaIxi6oFVVDQKqbn03E/edit#gid=1857944009
I think the subpersonality is the "interests" parameter
The data we're working from is derived directly from the NmlNpcParam information! The sub-personalities seemed to be the hobbies/interests at first, but there are more than two per personality and it would be interesting to see if the hobbies, dialogue, and NpcTalkType bool were all somehow related.
We were discussing this in the other thread recently as well: https://www.belltreeforums.com/threads/two-sub-types-of-each-personality.513841/page-5

All of this data is lifted directly from the game via datamining, so yes, this is all confirmed. The NpcTalkType boolean is one possibility, but other than it being two states, there isn't much, if anything, known about it.
Of note is the fact that the personalities tend toward around two hobbies and each character has two favorite colors. NpcTalkType would be a perfect fit, though, so hopefully data like this can give us a solid answer.

TL;DR we're going to analyze everything.

I think the subpersonality is the "interests" parameter

I think that's possible, but not necessarily correct. The guide says there are only two subtypes per personality, but you'll notice that there are more than two "interests" per personality. For example, I have three peppies: one is interested in fashion, the second in music, and the third in play. So I think maybe subtypes and interests are two separate things.

Very cool, @aibo!
Well, I'll be eager to help out and learn about whatever we can!
I just wish we had more slots for villagers haha.

Awesome idea! I was going through some screenshots to see if I had any records of usable data. Is this just generic, non-Lazy dialogue?

Let me check on this. It's possible we missed a line of dialogue. FWIW, as far as I can tell, all of the dialogue in the game is separated by personality in the game files and there doesn't seem to be overlap.

Okay, it is in there, but the wording is slightly different. Did you press 'a' once before taking this screenshot?
Your dialog is saved under ID 001_02 in BO_Spot_MysteryTour, so it's the same as "There's someone on this island! You're here visiting too?! I'm VILLAGER. You're NAME from ISLAND? Neat! I didn't expect to make a friend here! This island is so cool, ."

The 'hey' is missing but it might be a transcription error (because this data was pulled from the dialogue CSVs and parsing it is hard), so I'll double check on that and fix it today if that's the case.

Oh yeah, that's probably it! I took it a few days ago so I couldn't say for sure, but I reckon that it's most likely I hit A once first.

It is possible the guide could be wrong, especially since it doesn't bother to list the personalities to identify it. I've seen pictures of the guide and already found information that contradicts or is lacking when compared to datamined info.
