Gifting clothes to your villagers...

I was wondering... do the clothes that i give to my villagers, is there any way to make them wear it permanently or to give them various options so they rotate? I mean, sometimes i give them clothes and they seem to like it, they wear it for a few hours or even an entire day but the next day they're back to their initial clothing. I really want to change the outfit of my man Boots, he's kind of adorable but i don't really like his jester outfit honestly....

Dunno if it depends on their personalities, so do i need to give him clothes that go with his jock personality...? If anyone knows anything avout this I'd really appreciate some orientation, not only about how it is in New Horizons but how it's been in previous games, cause this is my first Animal Crossing and I'm still learning a lot.

I’m not too sure about this but I’ve given genji a few outfits and he seems to rotate between them! and I’m pretty sure it depends on their personality if they like the item or not

They seem to rotate through what you gift them which is nice but also sucks...
I gifted Lucky a shirt that just did not turn out fitting right whatsoever, it was a mummy wrap which I guess is a full body design but I thought it'd just be a tshirt for him...nope he wears it like a dress (nothing wrong with dresses but the bandages just look wrong lol).
So I cringe when he rotates to that one. Luckily they rotate pretty often. I wasn't sure if reporting them to isabelle resets that or only if it's custom designs.

You don't have to match it to their personality. They will comment if it's not something they'd usually choose but they still will wear it. On the flip side, they'll be more ecstatic in dialogue about something that does fit their personality.
