It's my birthday this Friday and I'm planning to go to Gamestop or best buy and get a new game for my 3DS since I only have Pokemon X and Animal Crossing: New Leaf at the moment. I have no idea what I should get though. I've tried both the Sonic: Lost World and Fire Emblem Awakening demos, beat them, and like the gameplay of both, but I might like some other games such as a LOZ or Mario one (awkward confession time: I've never actually played any of the Mario games .-. I did play 2 of the earlier Zeldas though). Anyone have recommendations?

EDIT: Also, don't recommend games that you play with other people (like Super Smash Bros I think) because none of my friends have gaming consoles and the one that does I only see at school
EDIT again: I like adventure-ish games (like Pokemon), games that you can continue playing after you've beaten them (like Animal Crossing/Pokemon), strategic games (like, idk, sudoku???? I can't think of any video games atm), and some 3d platformers and maybe 2d ones if it isn't very fast paced, I'm terrible at games like Mario/Sonic (unless they're first person like Sonic: Lost World or Mario Kart)

My current "Maybe" list:
-LOZ: A Link Between Worlds
-Sonic: Lost World
-Fire Emblem: Awakening
-Mario Kart 7 (might get 8 since it's just a week after my birthday)

EDIT: I ended up getting A Link Between Worlds and Sonic: Lost World. So far they're both awesome but I suck at Sonic except for the special rounds

I think your best bet is yeah, Mario or Legend of Zelda. If you want a platformer, get New Super Mario Bros. 2, or Mario Kart 7. If not, get A Link Between Worlds.

Might help if you lets us know what genre you prefer?
As such, I'm going to suggest a lot of different games, as I play a bit of everything.

Bravely Default
Mario and Luigi: Dream Team
Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Fire Emblem Awakening
Rune Factory 4
Pokemon X/Y
Kirby Triple Deluxe
Super Mario 3D Land

Edited first post with more info, I might check out some lets plays on youtube of some of the games (I already did for jawile's recommendations but adol added like 500 more)

The only others I have are Pilotwings and Harvest Moon: ToTT. Both are fun and super cheap now :-p

Mario Kart 7 is better for multiplayer but alone... it's boring, very. Fire Emblem is a must. 3D Land is fine, NSMB2 is boring. This game serves no purpose because New Super Mario Bros gets the job done even if it's 8 years old. Go get Donkey Kong Returns 3D instead if you want a good platformer. Sonic Lost World isn't that good (it doesn't have a real "focus", an identity). Luigi's Mansion is great, Kid Icarus is awesome but multiplayer is a bit "hardcore". Mario Golf World Tour has a LOT of contents even for solo players with tournaments so you don't need friends (except if you wanna play big matches).

So your best picks are, except Animal Crossing and Pokemon, Fire Emblem and Mario Golf. I heard the new Kirby is not bad but I dropped Kirby long ago after the amazing Kirby Super Star Ultra.

Harvest Moon maybe? I know I have Harvest Moon a New Beginning for 3DS and I quite like it.

Bravely Default is the best game I think I have ever played on a hand held. I would consider that IF you can find it.

I'd recommend Bravely Default as well(and it wasn't hard for me to find it when I got it back in March, though sales might not be as nuts for it where I am)

Reading your description, I would say a Legend of Zelda game (I have Ocarina of Time, but not played it through yet, and I haven't yet gotten Link Between World, so no experience there)
I'd also recommend Bravely Default. The fighting system might be a bit different from what you're used to, it's more a FF-styled game, but also a bit different. There could still be a demo available in the eStore if you want to try it out!

I would recommend Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D if you haven't played the original for N64. Such a great game, better than A Link Between Worlds in my opinion. ALBW is also a great game if you prefer the top-down view Zelda games. If you ask me, Super Mario 3D Land was a dissapointment, however it's still a fun game, but way too easy and short.
