It made the village feel more realistic. If you think about it, in Wild World and City Folk, the towns are cylindrical. It rolls up and down, but not side to side.

The world in City Folk is not a sphere, its more like a cylinder. that's the reason why they made the city "roll" in the later games, i believe.. so that it was more realistic/like the real world, which is round instead of flat.
but yeah, the acre system was probably better.. i don't remember playing the GC game much. the one big city thing makes it more organic, instead of cut and dry acres/chart.
