Gatekeeping

A friend of mine suggested these forums after I was berated and attacked for time traveling, he told me people here are a lot nicer. I was wondering why this is a thing? This game is supposed to be a sweet game yet I have a grown man telling me to physically harm myself over time traveling. I’ve had tons of positive interactions with people who time travel, and it always seems like the ones who are absolutely horrible and mean are the one who try to control how everyone else plays the game. The person who attacked me came to my island and got angry it was snowing, they said it ruined their immersion, but apparently not ruined enough to not sell their turnips first. It’s a game that’s supposed to be fun, I shouldn’t be called names and have my flowers trampled because I play a different way 😞

What do these gatekeepers feel about northern versus southern hemisphere? Southern hemisphere is going to be having winter start in about a month, so snow will be possible even without TTing.

If you're one of those people who don't want to see seasons outside of the season your game is in, then it's on YOU to ask the person you're visiting what season they're in, IMO. Because, like I said, regardless of TTing, there will be some people in different seasons.

That person was a jerk and I'm sorry you had to experience it.

I was thinking about this situation of traveling between different hemispheres. I had one person come to my island (southern hemisphere) to get a diy, and they said something like "autumn is so beautiful, but I won't stay long because I prefer to experience the seasons on my island". I mean, it's fair and I kinda understand that, but these things are bound to happen now that not everyone is playing on the same hemisphere.

The only one who should care about how you play is yourself. We all play differently. For example: with the past three games, I like to set my clock back a few weeks before ever starting, then I TT forward to eventually meet the current date. This way I get to binge the new game for a while to settle in.

You know what’s weird is we did that whole thing where you react with the flowers to show you’re pleased? I had zero clue he was a butthead! I didn’t really supervise him, I took him to my store and then followed him back to the airport and that’s when he started being a jerk!

Very weird. You didn't do this around noon, did you? If the turnip price changed someone could feel scammed, but they'd probably say something...

awww, to be 100% honest i would time travel as well if my switch wasn't parent locked because of my brothers!
edit: your right no one should do that no matter what you have done in a video game!
edit 2: ill be there for you!
Why you Lock you switch because of your borther? Can you tell us why?

I blame spoiler culture partly for that. I feel like people have gotten really extreme about their viewpoint on spoilers in the past 10-15 years. People act like the tiniest things are a spoiler now. I actually saw some people complain that they were spoiled for NH pre-release because they found out Bob or Marshal or some other been-in-AC-for-a-long-time villager that you can expect will PROBABLY be in the game was definitely confirmed to be in the game.

I got to see a little bit of what fall looked like too when I traded with some southern hemisphere people, but I feel like it's easy to not pay attention too hard when you're in the middle of a trade. You're busy with the business you're trying to take care of. It will still feel completely different when I get to see the changes happen on my own island. I don't think seeing a little in advance ruined anything.

However, maybe it helps that I've played other AC games. I don't think the seasons look that different from what they looked like in previous games. It's just prettier graphics. It's kinda like the difference between the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater on the original Playstation and the remastered version for PS4 that they announced yesterday. Different, but the same.

things weren't this bad during New Leaf.
the fanbase has taken a turn for the worse and I'm not happy about it.
The player base is larger than it has ever been before. While that’s awesome, an unfortunate caveat is that you are more likely to have more negative/toxic people.

I’m personally very happy the game is doing great. AC:NH’s fan base is massive and the game broke so many records. I can filter out the negative people, and communities like TBT do a great job at that, too.

I TT because I'm impatient when it comes to my projects like bridges or inclines being built. They make it easier for me to get around which in turn, makes my gameplay more enjoyable. If TTing makes you happy when you play, who cares about what people say! It's your copy :) This guy went too far. Calling you names is bad enough but trampling your flowers?!?!? What?!?!? If he didn't like it being winter that much he could've left. You stated that it was winter and that you TT so unless he's blind, he just seems like a jerk who wanted to ruin someone's day. I'm sorry this happened to you.

The interesting thing is, one cannot fully "experience" the seasons on anything but their own island (unless they visit someone in other seasons a lot maybe?). Every time I visit the island of a friend, my reaction is always: "It's so GREEN!" I don't feel like I am experiencing spring. I didn't see the gradual change of seasons. It feels like I went to a completely different place.

That’s absolutely disgusting behavior I’m so sorry OP. Nobody, ESPECIALLY A grown man, should be acting that way. Play the game how YOU want to play <3

When I get bored, I time travel to summer to fish for sharks. I just want a complete museum, it personally bothers me that it looks empty. If somebody came to my town and said that wasn’t good enough for them I’d say “I don’t care because it’s perfect to me.”

edit: I mentioned that I TT to get the prices for the turnips. There were clear photos on my profile that showed my game was in winter, including my profile picture. He was well aware I was a TT before coming to my island to sell his turnips. He was just a jerk.
Who is this man bothering you? I just want to talk with him...

I mean, I can understand that point of view. Like @DJStarstryker said, it can be a byproduct of spoiler culture. hell, I once was issued a warning on another forum because a mod got furious that I talked about something that happens at the very beginning of Mother 3, and that happened like... In 2018. They eventually removed the warning point after acknowledging that they did the wrong thing and that was an emotional attitude because they were planning to start playing the game that week.

I mean, I've seen people complaining about people saying that Luke is Vader's son a couple years ago...
