Games You Try To Avoid?

I'm a very competitive person so I love competitive games like strategic first person shooters, MOBAs, etc. But after feeding my brain too much playing these games, other games have become much less enjoyable. It's very hard for me to sit through a story-driven singleplayer game nowadays. The last game I tried to play was Divinity: Original Sin 2 (which was very fun!) but eventually I lost interest due to competitive games.

So long story short, I try to avoid competitive games. But I'm pretty much hooked on them.

World of Warcraft... which ironically I love playing... I avoid playing it because I love it and it WILL be the only thing I focus on if I pick it up again... plus I don't want to pay $20 usd every 3 months just for me to have access to all the time and work I put into my character...
I feel this with certain games. It's obviously just the sunk cost fallacy at work but I will pick up games I don't even necessarily enjoy because of all the time I've put into them.

Do you enjoy other story and character-driven games? I loved Persona 4's cast but I understand that the gameplay - especially in dungeons - have you hoping you'll be done soon.

Yep. Xenoblade Chronicles, Fire Emblem Three Houses, Bravely Default, and Octopath Traveler to name a few. All fantastic games in their own right.

I avoid games that have...

- Repetitive grinding for the majority of the gameplay that makes the game feel soulless/boring
- Gambling/gacha as the main focus, "pay to win". At that point, how is it any different than a game at the casino? 😅
- Time invested > Skill (as in, the amount of time that you play the game solely defines how strong you are rather than your skill)

Playing the Last of Us Part 2 has made me realize I should never play another stealth game and just stick to watching people play it on YouTube.

Also, I should stop playing competitive games... I get way too anxious/stressed playing them.

Horror games, idk I just don't really get the appeal of them. Also it seems like their gameplay usually involves a lot of walking and that's it.
Plus I already played the Submerged Castle in Pikmin 2 which is like the highlight of horror in gaming so why bother with anything else. :lemon:

First person shooters, or shooters in general. I can get competitive, but those types of games frustrate me to no end, esp when I get stuck. Plus I just don't find them all that fun. The most fun I've had with a shooter was when it was my dad, sister and I playing Halo in a multiplayer battlefield. Someone figured out how to spawn tanks so we spent alot of time tryin to blow it up. It was fun with people I know but that's cause we deviate from what the main goal is to just blowing stuff up. Even when my sister and I play, we resort to blowing stuff up cause it's more fun than going around killing each other.

Also Pocket Camp if it counts. Since New Horizons's release I have not touched that game. I still get the push notifications from it.

I wouldn't say "avoid"...because, that makes it sound like it's a challenge that I need to keep putting effort into.

But...I definitely don't play games like Fortnight, Destiny, etc. Any of those big "this is the IT game" type releases...I always have zero interest in those. And I hold a special level of resentment for Fortnight after the hacking situation hit me personally. Lol.

I don't like games that force a narrative on me or games that "spoon feed" their story to me. Also can't stand "walking simulators" as I find the whole running around/make choices thing boring. I love horror but get bored with things like Outlast very quickly because it's run/hide/repeat also having murderous maniacs chase me down these corridors doesn't phase me. I like RPG type things and Stardew Valley and ofc Animal crossing but I got the Sims and the idea of building a life seemed fun but oH GaWd you need to manage everything...eat drink sleep ahhh it's so stressful

I also like a high degree of challenge as long as it's not bs so most fps games don't fit that.

That's why nothing entertains me like dark souls. Constantly on edge, piece the story together yourself, don't get it, watch VaatiVidya, still don't understand...

Nothing gets my heart beating like hyper-accurate dodge timing, risky combat timing, managing stamina/health/healing/where the f the boss went/oh crap he's on top of me/back to the bonfire.

It took me sixty-something tries to beat Slave Knight Gael and every try had my heart pounding.

It's not for everyone, but I like it.

High key respect to Sims players

I avoid horror because the typical horror elements give me a panic attack.
I avoid strategy games because I don't want a slow learning curve.

Any shooter games. I get so upset over them it’s very bad. Also, Mario kart and Mario party... I go off The Rails if I’m losing.

Anything overly steep but genre-wise dumb FPS realistic games, moba, overly annoying j/srpgs that are hard even on normal difficulty, anything that requires co-ordination like guitar hero and stuff, hardcore/leet mmo things(i play aqw but you can play that fine alone and it's perfectly acceptable to play without voice chat and you can basically ask whoever for help n stuff)... also most rhythm games (except taiko bc you can play that with button mash rather than swinging perfectly)..and edgy indie games that are basically just uh...

what i can think about now and also most sports games unless it's like old mario karts lol

Games that make me aggravate me like slither.io. It doesn't respond half the time and is terribly glitchy. I get awfully annoyed at the other snakes. That game is just very annoying and stressful for me lol. Otherwise games with time limits and time quests, also incredibly stressful. I generally prefer strategy, skill, creative and/or relaxing games (hence being on an animal crossing forum). I'm a bit of an escapist when it comes to games so I'll never go for anything that stresses me out too much.

Splatoon 2 became kinda a game which I started to avoid for a while now, mainly because I noticed that I don't have so much fun with it anymore while playing online and mostly ending getting upset when I just lose so many rounds in a row. It's not like that I hate it or so, it's just not the same for me as it used to be.

Also, I hate Fortnite so much, try to avoid this trash as best as I can.

Ngl I don't have any interests with all the mainstream shooting games like Fortnight or Rainbow Siege 6. Not really my cup of tea.

I avoid a lot of MOBAs in general, and the only reason why I started playing League is because of my friends. I never play the game alone due to fear of getting flamed tbh. Also the over-competitiveness ruins the enjoyment of it.

Actually, I hate a lot of competitive games in general.

I tend to avoid games where the plot is based around the character's mental state, mainly because very few of them handle the subject matter in a way I would consider appropriate (e.g. the plethora of psychological horror games where the big "twist" is that all the scary monsters were actually innocent people and it was all in your character's head because he's just a nutjob who went off his meds)

Are there any games you try to avoid playing at all, and what are your reasons for doing so.

I personally try to avoid playing Minecraft, because it gives me a headache and nausea after 1-2 hours of playing it. I usually then feel kind of lightheaded for the next few hours after playing.

I try to avoid games that I know will disappoint me but only end up playing them anyways hoping they won't disappoint me only to be disappointed that they did.

Just mobile games honestly. Even Animal Crossing and Mario Kart. Rather Nintendo would just shift their to main games for switch. Would have tried Pocket Camp but fear it may mess up NH for me. :/

As a specific genre Battle Royale and sports games hold little appeal to me, but I also tend to avoid multiplayer only games as a general rule.
