I did the same thing with Ankha! I got some good advice from a friend.

What you do is, when Isabelle says that a villager is moving, you save and quit the game. Then, choose your character like you are again about to play. But, choose to adjust the date and time. Then just close your DS's lid and put it on charge! This essentially 'freezes' your game, and keeps a villager if your town for longer while an auction takes place. I'm doing this right now for Fang.
