What is it that determines where a villager will put their home when moving into your village. I believe it's not entirely random and that they do tend to favor certain locations (like near the mayor's home? or maybe they just prefer plotting next to other houses?)

I am not an expert with plot resetting, but I have tried it a few times in the past, and when a villager is moving in, they seemed to favor a few specific locations. From your past experiences, what do you think influences this?

i always get villagers crowding my house. i finally decided tojust let my favourites live near me like a little neighbourhood. soo annoying :/

I've had several villagers move in plots that old villagers had. I think this is simply because it was an empty space.

I am by no means an expert in acnl plot movement but I have noticed that there is a favored spot, though it's not always the case. For example, I have a straight line of four villagers on the south end of my town. I only plot reset one villager into moving there, but the rest moved there on their own because one of my starters plotted there in the beginning. I also had Skye plot reset next to Bruce almost immediately. So from what I can gather, they prefer areas that are already populated, either with other villagers or characters (mayor or otherwise). I've had both Shari and Alli move right in front of or right behind a character house. So I put up pwps to prevent this from happening again. I've also had villagers move in directly on top of where the previous villager that moved out used to be. I easily plotted Mira on top of Olaf's old spot. Didn't take me but three tries, and the ones before she was plotting in front of his old spot anyway.
This isn't always the case as I learned today with Rudy. It took me about 40 minutes to get him out of a spot between my cafe and plaza. I'm saving that spot for a pwp and I found it odd he'd plot there because there are no other villagers or character houses anywhere nearby. But that's where he wanted to go... he'd move one space forward or to the right every time... so annoying!

Sometimes villagers will favour old plots from past villagers. This really helped plot resetting in my first town, because I wanted them to move into the old plots. In my second town, I wanted them all together on the lower half of the map. But they kept choosing the old plot that was right in front of my house. Which was the reason why I kicked that villager out! Eventually they ended up where I wanted them, but it was definitely more difficult getting them there.

Usually, villagers who move in my town prefer old plots from villagers who previously left. Most of the time however, they would plot new locations that villagers never plot at all. At least I like villagers plotting old locations.

thanks guys, it seems like I was a little right. I did a bit more plot resetting today for villagers that moved in and while they could potentially plot anywhere available in the town, there does seem to be a higher percentage chance that they are going to plot their house near other houses. Not particularly your mayor's house though.
