Fool proof way to get rare stumps?

So, I just happened upon something on Tumblr saying you can get a rare stump every time by chopping twice with a regular (or golden) axe, then giving the final blow with a silver one. I surprisingly haven't heard this before and I haven't tested it yet. Does it actually work? And if you didn't know, like me, now you do

To be honest I've gotten rare stumps from planting perfect fruit of any kind. I get a lot of hearts. And i only use golden axes.
