Flies won't spawn?

I've had a big trash heap (~20 boots, cans, and tires) in a fairly high-traffic area for about a month now, and I haven't seen a single fly. I know they're supposed to be just tiny specks, but I haven't even seen that when I go by. Ants spawned immediately when I had some rotten turnips so I don't know what the issue is. Is there some other trick I'm missing?

flies are just deceptively rare, personally i've had better luck with them spawning on rotten turnips (they can spawn alongside the ants)

I was able to get a fly from a spoiled turnip. I didn't even notice the fly at first until it started to fly around.
I hope you're able to get a fly soon!

They're much rarer than you think. It taken me ages to find one and I had several pieces of rubbish out to spawn one

i had a can and a spoiled turnip in front of my house trying to get an ant and a fly. of course the ants are much easier to see, there is a whole line of them going into/out of a hole. the fly is hard to see especially when it lands. the one i got was sitting on the can and i had no idea it was there til it started flying(i couldnt see it at all). I just checked back at different times until one showed up. just walk close to it so if its sitting still it will move.
