Etiquette Question - Visiting other towns

This may be the wrong thread. I don't really know know where else to post it.

Anyway, I tend to just visit random towns that have their gate open. I just always assumed that if the gate is open, they're fine with me visiting. But I understand that some folks just open their gates for trades and things like that. Is it expected that I ask permission before entering another town? I will definitely start asking if that's the case.

When I'm visiting a town, I think I have pretty good manners. I don't run, I ask permission before exploring or shopping, etc. But I'm worried that showing up without an invitation is rude.

it depends why somebody is opening their gates. if they allow visitors, then that'd be probably be fine depending on if they want permission before you come over. if it's for a trade, then that's pretty rude and the other visitor may get the wrong idea that you're going to try and steal their items, but depends on the person.

you should just be safe and ask if you can come over or not.

I often worry the exact same things, especially since over the last weeks I've added so many people, and some are for trading purposes while others are to be friends. It's easy to forget who is who though, unless you strictly remember to delete that person's FC after trading with them (if that's the only reason you added them).

If you visit someone who you added to be friend though, I assume they won't mind too much and can easily say if that's the case. Then you can just leave again.

I do the same with asking to shop. I think people appreciate that. I also always make it a given to only ever walk around their town, and to use their paths if they have any.

I think the OP is meaning if say, you have had a person added for a long time and haven't seen their posts. People don't always check AC websites before playing, so the only way to find out other than that is to actually visit.

It's an individual thing. Some would think it's rude to "barge in" and others don't mind. I only add people in order to complete trades and then I delete Friend Codes when we're finished. Maybe you can contact the person beforehand and ask if they'd like some company? If that's not possible, drop in. The worst that can happen is they'll kick you out.

I don't think it's rude.

Just pay attention to who on your friends list actually does a lot of trading so that way you dont visit their towns in a trade-and I say that only because if you visit you might cause a disconnect if you are to far away from your modem/wifi/whatever.

Oh they didn't say that exactly, I just know I've had the dilemma of playing but being away from the computer so I can't check. Also since most people's online names are different to their AC names it can be confusing knowing who is who.

I normally take the chance and pop over. I've sometimes had the host say they were just trading. I'll say sorry, they say no worries, gates closed, no harm done.

I know some people update their little message in the friend's list, some may say "come visit" or something like that. If I were you and it appears that I was just barging in or interrupting a trade, I see no harm in asking and/or apologizing

I had never just left my gates open for random visitors until today ^~^ I only got 2, but it was nice. I'll probably do that more in the future.

Thanks, everyone for your replies. I'll probably just keep doing what I've been doing and start paying more attention when it comes to adding people on here just for trades and whatnot. It can be difficult knowing who is who after a while because TBT usernames and AC names are usually different and I don't always play the game while I'm on the computer to be able to check anyway.

well, i differ from the others who posted- i do think its rude to show up uninvited just bc the gate is open. if somebody knows you well enough to be okay with that, then they should have you added to the bestfriends list in the game. even then, i'd rather somebody ask first even if they are on my bestfriends list, they can easily to do so through the bestfriends chat feature. (of course there are exceptions for best friends IRL and relatives).

I personally think it's a little rude to visit out of the blue unless the host has said you can come by anytime. The only times I open my gates is to trade or adopt out a villager. I've had accidental visitors every now and then but they let me know right away. But if someone were to purposely come over without unannounced, it'd be kinda inconvenient. If I had a town with less than 10 villagers and got someone visiting without permission and ended up with their void villager, I'd be annoyed tbh.

It's always best to ask beforehand to be safe. I wouldn't go into towns unannounced, but that's just me. ^^;

Ah see. That's what I was afraid of. So far, I haven't barged in on a trade or anything (as far as I know), but I think it's probably a good idea to ask if I'm able to unless it's been previously agreed I can visit whenever, and if I'm unable to ask then I'll just skip that town for the moment. Thanks so much for your opinions, everyone. I know everyone plays the game differently and I just don't want to make it less enjoyable for anyone else with my mistakes.

I had someone visit me by accident when they were trying to visit another person, it didn't really bother me since the person I was trading with had just left. Also, about a month and a half after playing I had 45 FCs saved and I had no idea who most were. Now I delete FCs after trades or whatnot, unless I interact with them in game quite a bit or know them in real life. I only ever leave my gates open to visitors on local play. Maybe after my town is more complete I will open to visitors though.

Always ask! It's like in real life, walking into a stranger's house (or even a friend's) unexpectedly because their door was unlocked. Awkward.

I think it's best to ask first to avoid any uncomfortable situations. Some people won't mind, others will. I, personally, would mind if someone came in without notice. You never know if someone is in the middle of a trade, or in some situations they may have made plans to play with specific people and you took up that slot now, etc. I'm sure most of the time people will be too polite to express that they're not alright with you coming over without notice and it's seldom a big problem. It's definitely a topic that's been mentioned in my group chat, though, and it seems most people would prefer a notice.
