new leaf lamenting

i've had my 3ds for many years, i think 11 years now. despite this, i am a little late to the party, and only picked up new leaf a little while ago. i started my town almost 4 years ago but only really got into it last week (for reference, kicks is being built right now in my shopping district). reflecting back on my experience with new horizons, so much of it is the same, especially the thrill of always rushing to complete the next task, pay off the next loan, etc. i've found new leaf to be even better in that sense because of the nostalgia tied to it.

however, one major (and saddening) difference i've noticed in my time on new leaf vs. new horizons is that any time i needed help with new horizons, i was able to find someone whether a friend of mine in real life, someone on here, someone on nookazon, whatever it might've been that could've helped me. since nintendo shut off online support for the 3ds, i've felt stranded in my town and any time i need help i have to go to 12 year old reddit posts. in a way, this is nice because i feel like getting help from people on new horizons got me way ahead too quickly and took away some of the fun.

my main point though is looking at what people were able to do on new leaf together before online support was shut off makes me so sad. like i said, i've had my 3ds for eleven years and have only just started getting into new leaf. i feel like i missed so much. and while i love the nostalgic and fun experience of enjoying animal crossing, it is not the same knowing that i'm essentially stranded in my town. i hope you all know that if we still had online capabilities, i'd definitely be coming to all of your towns and hanging out with all of you :3

nostalgia is a weird thing. but i'm glad i have a space like this to share my feelings about it <3

I think there has been some stuff worked on to have online with the 3ds. You'd have to look into it, and I don't know a ton about it. Although it's not game emulation, talking in more detail could be a violation of forum rules because it is emulating an online service I think?? Not sure. But yeah could be worth looking into if there is a way to have online with 3ds since Nintendo shut down all their server support of the console.

if you can mod your 3DS (I think all models can be modded now) then you can use Pretendo to connect with people online I believe!

I do get you though. I remember way back when, I joined a discord and we all traded each other fruit and items and touch traded to catalogue on NL. Now, not only do so few people play it, but even fewer have hacked 3DSs. It feels a bit depressing to go back to my old town now!

I agree. I love New Leaf so much, but it feels so lonely now! Like, New Horizons feels like it has a huge bustling community, while New Leaf feels stranded. Without unofficial means, you are alone. No online, no online minigames, no humans can interact with you in-game. This combined with the fact that the game overall has a much more nostalgic and relaxing vibe makes thinking about New Leaf a bit saddening honestly.

You can always use unofficial means, however. There is a really popular fan replacement for Nintendo Network that is currently in development, and it’s great.
