Like everyone's been saying here, I think a fee is understandable as long as you're not overcharging for it. I personally don't charge fees because I don't want to subject people to something that I don't want to deal with myself.
I think it depends, I have a catalogue shop and I charge 300k for 95 items, which sing other shops I'm on the cheaper side, but it does takes time and on average 15-20 minutes per visit, getting full sets of items, and using a large chunk of your island to set it, so I think is fair. When I open for a DIY or Celeste, I always ask for tips, but they are not necessary, just one time some stole all of them, but other times I gotten some money and items, for which I'm really grateful.
When I visit someone, I always tip, I find it extremely rude to visit without leaving a tip(normally 1nmt), since that player gave us the opportunity to get something we wanted.
personally, i'm not a fan of an entry fee AT ALL.
the thing is, however, i ended up hosting for turnips and not asking for a fee - i just mentioned that a tip is appreciated - and well. i spent my entire afternoon hosting for people, some of them were just outright rude and the money i could have made by playing by myself also went down the drain. i might charge an entry fee the next time, nothing out of this world, but generally speaking, not asking for an entry fee usually is not worth it.
I think entry fees are okay as long as they aren't extreme. I don't charge entry fees personally, but it's definitely a bit stressful having other people on your island, so I can understand the desire for some sort of compensation. I always try to give people at least a small tip when I visit their island for that reason. The only exception is if they explicitly state that they don't want tips.
I opened once for people to come in for a diy for free. I got a ton of responses, and it was a bit challenging to get through them. I was happy to do it for free, but a ton of people ghosted me and never responded and it wasted a lot of my time. It was frustrating but I feel bad charging people for things that cost me nothing but a bit of time.
However, I understand small fees, because it can be frustrating to get tons of responses and to get ghosted. But I've seen some fees that are totally unreasonable.
I think they're fine when it's 1NMT or 99K IGB because I think that's pretty reasonable if you're hosting a lot of people. Hosting can be a lot of work and kind of stressful too, so I always tip either way!
i've hosted many times before for DIYs or Celeste and I never enforce an entry fee and still got a lot of voluntary tips because this community in particular is very generous.
I think it's understandable for high turnip prices however to charge some sort of reasonable entry fee because you must get swamped with requests and you'd probably be hosting for a while if you want to let everyone in, especially if they want to make multiple trips.
I don't like entry fees, to be honest. For things like selling/buying turnips I understand having entry fees, but for anything else (like shopping, villager crafting, etc) I prefer the "tips appreciated, but not necessary" approach
Mimi: The whole thing seems kind of ridiculous and a little greedy to me. We usually just have one person over at a time to prevent them from doing anything or we'll fence off an area around the entrance if we're really concerned. The only time we'd really ask for anything is if we're selling something.
I don't usually use entry fees, but if I happened to get a high turnip price, I would probably use one for the same reason you mentioned- to reduce the number of requests to visit.
