How do you all feel about entry fees? Personally, I only use entry fees for one reason, and that's so I don't get swamped with requests. I like to keep them low, like 1 nmt, and I like to offer other ways to buy in, like maybe a couple of star fragments or a gold nugget or something. I don't want my entry fees to be crazy high, but I also understand not wanting to monitor people coming and going all day and not get anything out of it. idk, what are your thoughts?
I think it’s fine unless you charge an exorbitant amount like 10NMT to sell turnips or something like that. The fee serves two purposes alright, one is to reduce the traffic and the other is you profit.
It’s up to the person to decide if it’s worth paying the fee or not.
If I see someone charge 10NMT for Turnips, I’ll just go look for someone else with a more reasonable fee.
Personally, I usually charge for cataloguing sets. Haven’t been lucky enough with turnip prices to charge for that, but everything else, I make it optional.
entry fees are fine within reason! 1 nmt/gold nugget/etc are reasonable but when you start charging 10 nmt as an entry fee, that’s just ridiculous. i’ve seen two people in the last day ask for 10 nmt to go get a diy/see redd and it’s just,,,, why?
I always said I’d never charge entry fees. But after having my gates open last week for turnip selling on the Turnip Exchange, I kinda understand why some people do.
It is impossible to play the game whilst having a large amount of people coming and going. Even if you’re only having three people over at a time. You just end up sitting or standing somewhere whilst other people do what they need to do and leave. It’s an inconvenience for you as the host.
I’m not saying I agree with the 10NMTs, 5 gold ores and 5x 99k entry fees. Especially for towns where you’re just visiting to use the shops or see Celeste.
But for situations where you’ll just be putting your switch in idle and waiting for people to come and go, I get asking for a small amount.
For turnips I now ask for 50k entry per trip. And for DIYs I ask for 5 x Bait. I feel like these prices aren’t extortionate but I also get something out of the experience.
To each their own. Personally I'd feel kinda bad to spend a long time on a stranger's island for them to get absolutely nothing out of it. And the amount of people who would come to your island is also something to think about, it's okay to change your fee according to your service.
I agree with what have been said previously, I just want to say @Hsn97 I find your bait idea excellent!!!
It's the one thing I can't be bothered crafting, yet it's super easy and accessible to everyone. I love the idea!
Especially since I get people use NMT to island hop, but now that I've got 10 villagers I like, I don't plan on doing that for a while so my miles are accumulating, which means I don't really need any more NMTs. They're always helpful for trades, of course, but unless you are doing lots of it you don't need to sit on hundreds of tickets...
I've opened my gate for people to sell their turnips on Wednesday and didn't charge for an entry. I did say tips are appreciated (NMT, bells). Honestly, I understand that people charge for entry. It takes up a lot of time (I let 15-ish people enter and it took almost 2 hours of my time). But I'd say, keep it within a reasonable fee. (1NMT, bells, hybrids)
I think it's fair unless you overprice it, we are paying for your time when you open the gates, or when for example someone has wasted their time searching for a good turnip price.
I only worked with an entry fee once, when a friend had Celeste on her island and we wanted to try the turnip exchange Celeste part of it. And we thought that having different options would allow more people to join us, like 5k bells, 1 gold, 1 star fragment or 1 NMT.
It’s ridiculous on turnip exchange islands because they ask for Celeste diy’s or lots of money/NMT. It’s better when it at leasts costs cheap like 1 nmt, under 100k bells. I don’t really visit to other islands, but i’ve seen crazy prices just to sell turnips or to visit and island.
This is why if I visit a town to use the shop or talk to an NPC and end up spending a while there then I will try to leave them a little tip if the owner isn't afk anyway
I think entry fees are fine. If I ever had high turnip prices I think I would charge just a little maybe 50k IGB or less, just enough to stop a flood of people coming to potentially wreck my town, although for shops and stuff I would just let people in for free
i was pretty anti-entry fee but since it is mostly the norm now i'm kinda used to it. i would be fine paying 1nmt to go to someone's island for their meteor showers/celeste, but to the people who charge 10nmt those are my new enemies
edit: just found someone charging a 10nmt entry fee to buy the aluminium briefcase LOL ok, gtfo
I always ask for tips and people can be really generous, I don't really go to islands that ask for a fee but I always end up leaving a tip anyway? It's up to the person that's hosting ultimately
Depends on the service and fee! I don't mind a small fee generally, or a tip - I like to show my appreciation if someone is gracious enough to open up their island and use their time to help other people.
If it's a more cumbersome service like letting me catalog items, I don't mind a steeper fee since the other person is putting more work into letting me do this on their island, usually.
I'm a little more leery when people charge exorbitant fees when they're just opening their gates so people can get a recipe from a crafting villager, talk to Celeste or sell turnips. It's still nice of you to let people in and you are taking the risk that people trample your flowers, take things lying on the ground, etc, so I generally don't mind tipping, but don't be that guy charging 3-10 NMT per person/trip just for opening your gates, lol.
I've found that you don't even have to have an entry fee, I hosted one time saying no entry fee (but tips appreciated) and got over 2 million bells/a handful of nmt/some gold ore
people are a lot nicer than you think! not to say I'm against entry fees, but 10 nmt for anything is absolutely absurd
I'm not against entry fees and I understand it helps filter the traffic a little but some entry fees I just don't understand (like a fee for Lief or shopping - guess I don't get why people charge people to spend more on your island???). Some fees look like just straight trolling though (10 NMT for 150 turnip prices???)
I don't mind entry fees and I'm saying that as someone who is currently running a giant cataloging island.
I charged entry fees for other reasons when I was starting out as I was more desperate for supplies/bells but nothing crazy. Also gave different options of payment so that it would be easier for some.
i don't mind (reasonable) entry fees for something that requires a lot of your time and energy like hosting a turnip queue, but i never ask for an entry fee for things like celeste/saharah/villagers crafting DIYs.
I think it’s fine, but I never charge them. AC players tend to be generous and people tend to like giving a tip more than they like paying a fee. I’ve gotten well over 100k in bells from a single hosting session before and never charged people a single bell.
It cost me nothing to open my gates so I'd never charge a fee for anything.. I don;t even like accepting donations but I can stop someone from dropping items at the airport (or wherever)...
I've opened for people to sell Turnips, come to meteor showers, get DYI's ect...
Some people are just greedy. I'd never visit an Island that charges an entry fee, ever! I do leave donations though...
