Drake moved in on my paths, even though I had an empty spot open?

I recently started playing again after several months, and as a result several villagers moved out. Well, today I loaded up my game to see that Drake plotted his house right on top of some paths, even though I have two available spots he could have moved to. I'm so confused? I thought that since the update, villagers wouldn't move on top of paths unless there was absolutely no room for them. But I have two available plots that I know are big enough as several villagers have lived there before, and he still moved right on top of my paths. He also killed several of my flowers...

Has this ever happened to anyone else? This is really frustrating :/

Happened to me while plot resetting Freya! I had an open spot but she refused to move into it. Went back, made a new spot, and she moved into that spot without any issues xD It's strange that it happens :( First time it happened often in my town since playing after update. I guess the issue isn't fixed, as it's supposed to make it where villagers won't crush patterns, flowers, or trees lmao.

It is less likely that villagers will move on to paths, but not impossible. If you have nowhere for them to go, they will plot on paths. If you covered your entire town in paths, they have to go somewhere and then it becomes randomized again. Those two areas you had open could probably not had worked. If you show us a pic, we could see if there were any hindrances that stopped them from plotting there.

Also I had to plot reset a hundred times or more for some of these villagers to go where I wanted them. It wasn't because they couldn't go there, they just didn't want to. It's annoying and stupid, but hopefully in the next game (if we are still in some position of power) we have more control where they can go.

Hm. Well, I know they should have worked as Bunnie and Lucky used to live in these two spaces and nothing has changed since they lived here. I guess it's just bad luck. But thankfully I have amiibo cards, so I can just move him out and back in again. Hopefully the second time around he'll plot where I want him lol

You're going to need to plot reset if you want them in a specific spot. Trust me, I had to plot reset all of my villagers because none of them wanted to go anywhere remotely where I wanted. They plotted in orchids, flower gardens, you name it they did it like the little jerks they are.

I have had them plot over paths before when there are open spaces, sometimes referred to as 'dead spaces' where supposedly no villagers will plot. It's frustrating, but not as much if you have a scanner and cards. If someone infiltrates (lol) a sacred area against my wishes, I move them out, back in and simply keep resetting until they settle down where they are meant to.

I echo Reginald Fairfield - in the sense given villagers have plotted in those empty plots before and now haven't, chosing to take out paths instead.
To me that means something has changed around those empty plots - either a gem rock spawn or maybe you have added other villagers/PWP in those acres - there is a thread on here about there may well be a limit to the number of houses you can have in each acre (those acres still exist in acnl, just that players don't need to use them so much as in previous games).

When I was just starting to move in villagers and put their houses, I still tried to do plot resetting even though I laid down paths. That's just too risky on my part to load my mayor straight away. I'd rather take my time to plot reset so I could still go back to loading a new save file again or TT back to previous day if I need to fix something.

I don't plot reset now though since I already have them in ideal spots. When I feel like just changing the villager, I'd cover the other possible 3x3 spots (the part where there are group of flowers/bushes/trees) then load my mayor on the day when I'm expecting someone to move in. It never fails, at least for me. The spot where the previous villager was always gets replaced by a new plot, in the exact same spot.

In short, plot reset if you have doubts and probably not 100% sure. In my case, my town is almost finished and I know the new villagers are just gonna go in the same spot so I don't need to.
