Doubts when cataloguing in Nookazon (or "touch trading" as it's known there) - Seller wants to keep my offered item?

I recently started to use Nookazon to look for a very specific DIY and I'm doing some trades on the meantime.
Some of these trades are what they call "touch trades" which is nothing but cataloguing with a price tag. I hadn't had any issue until yesterday. A player was listing an accessories stand for touch trade, and I offered her a kitchen island (which was on her wishlist). What happened was that the player tried to leave after taking both items -mine and hers- involved in the trade. I stopped her and she dropped my item without saying anything and just left. I was taken aback because her reviews were all positive, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt and thought that maybe she had forgotten it was a touch trade. Today morning she sent me a message telling me that she did not like the way things went yesterday and was basically asking me to give her the kitchen island since, to her understanding, the "touch" part was supposed to be honored only by me, the buyer. In all touch trades I had prior to this, the parties involved (I've been on both seller and buyer positions) only kept their respective items and then parted ways. Sometimes the players I'm trading with (perhaps because they see that I don't have many reviews) explicitly message me to remind me that we cannot keep each other's items. I'm confused because while this isn't stated clearly anywhere on Nookazon I thought it was common sense, but perhaps I'm in the wrong so I would really like to hear some of your experiences. Thank you!

I would say she is definitely in the wrong here - touch trades are, as you said, just cataloguing with a price tag and that is expected to be upheld by both parties unless explicitly stated otherwise. especially when you consider the value of the items you in particular were trading - an accessories stand is maybe 1k bells to buy whereas a kitchen island is about 100k. it could be that since you haven't got many reviews she decided to try and take advantage. either way, good thing you caught her. might be worth making a thread in Nook's cranny here to see if you can find the DIY? I've never had a bad experience trading on tbt
luckily that's never happened to me before on nookazon, although someone did once try and pick up the NMT they'd just given me for a villager.

Yeah, this can be a misunderstanding due to the term "touch trade". It doesn't mean that you're trading the touching of items; it means that the trade is paying to touch something. Basically when a seller lists an item as a "touch trade" on Nookazon, it means that you the buyer are paying something to pick up and drop their item. So whatever you pay stays with the seller and they get their item back.

That's what touch trade is on Nookazon. (I learned this when I wanted an elaborate kimono stand and was amazed at finding a low price on there. The seller explained that I was paying to touch the item, not keep it. They sent me a message about how it works.)

If I had a certain item for sale, say a Fairy Dress, and I wanted to trade it for a different color or a ballet dress or whatever, then I wouldn't call it a touch trade. It would just be a regular seller listing and we would both keep the items.

If you want to arrange something like picking up and dropping each other's stuff, you can go that here on Bell Tree where there is more opportunity to explain what you are looking to do.

Edit:

Here's the info from Nookzon's FAQ

"What is “touch trading”/catalog selling?
Touch trading is when a user "touches" an item to add it to their inventory, with the expectation that they will give the item back to the original owner.
Touching an item adds it to your inventory. Once an item is added to your inventory, it will be in your catalog at the Nook Stop machine for you to order. Certain items cannot be touch traded including but not limited to: Saharah mystery purchases, Gulliver presents and DIYs.
Instructions
  1. Seller drops the item for the buyer to pick up
  2. Buyer picks up the seller's item
  3. Buyer drops the item to give it back to the seller
  4. The item is now available for the buyer to purchase at their Nook Stop machine under the "Nook Shopping" category"

Touch trade is a universal term for a long time to mean each person is just touching per the trade. If Nookazoon changed the rules for their site alone Maria, then they should make it explicitly clear.

That's like someone advertising buy one get one in a shop, but the customer actually has to pay more to just get one.

I didn't want to mention the value of the items on my post because it seems to me that some players on Nookazon have a very different understanding of "value" that goes beyond their buy price at Nooks, but I agree with your perspective. I had a previous touch trade involving a grand piano and a floating biotope planter. I don't even wanna imagine what I'd done if the player tried to leave with a piano that at the time I bought left me broke. Perhaps I should choose my items for touch trading more wisely 😅

Thank you for your suggestion, I'll make a thread in Nook's Cranny to see if anyone has the duck decoy. I don't know if it's a rare DIY lol I just really like ducks 🦆

Thank you! I made sure to check the FAQ immediately after this trade took place. I guess the misunderstanding arises from the fact that the offer is an item and not bells or NMTs to which the seller is absolutely entitled. I reached out to their team and they sent me a reply. I'll leave it below in case someone else has the same doubts as me, since it seems they are having issues with this specific type of trade due to the terminology involved and the expectations it creates:

Hello! Everyone performs touch trades differently. We are currently working on ways to clarify things like this. But I highly recommend reaching out to the members prior to flying to to their island to complete the trade. This opens up the communication.

Interesting! Hopefully they can improve their terminology to reflect this. But they'd also have to change the code to accept a mutual trade.

Ngl I find it vaguely annoying that new sites with new community members make up their own terms and their own rules for a community that’s almost 20 years old.

It’s always been called cataloguing and it’s always been done the way you said. I think you're absolutely in the right.

The term catalogue also makes communication easier. It’s either ‘you can catalogue my item for your item’ meaning you pay the item or ‘you can catalogue my item and I’ll catalogue your item’

I’ve been a newbie in a very old communities before and I just learned their terms and their history

It definitely feels strange. And it makes me feel like a boomer lol. I've always known it as cataloguing because what we have in Animal Crossing is a catalogue. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think touch trade is a thing in Pokemon. At least it used to be when I was last playing it sometime around 5 years ago. It was meant to be done to complete your pokedex and it was called touch trading because you traded pokemon using the trade center.
