double checking- can villagers remove hats in their house?

scoot has a green poop hat displayed and i want it out, do i have to give him an item for it or will he eventually just get rid of it?

otherwise i'll just find him a decoy duck

Did you gift him the hat? because i believe you can complain to isabelle about it!! and or give him something of the same size which he will then use to occupy the space!

Coco displayed funny glasses I gave her in her house. I ended up giving her a plant and she replaced that item along with the cute lamp she bought from me and she wears the funny glasses a lot more frequently now. So I think if you give Scoot an item that is the same size, it might replace it.

i'll probably give him a decoy duck then to fit the duck theme, i could try reporting him but his shirt is original so it might not do much

They can, one of my villagers was wearing a hat that was soon displayed and after a while, it was removed from the room. They can wear it sometimes as well.
