Does wearing a hat really keep you from tanning?

So, I spend a lot of time out in the sun and my mayor is VERY tan. I don't have anything against tan(ner) characters, but seeing as I am as pale as a ghost in reality, I was hoping to have my character stay pale on the game. Does wearing a wide rimmed hat really keep you from tanning? Do sunglasses or something similar work?

A hat will work. I wear a flamenco hat on my mayor, and he has not tanned in the slightest for the past month. Sunglasses will not do anything about it.

A hat definitely helps with a tan!
I noticed the other day my mayor got a little tanned so I wore a hat and a few days it was gone and sunglasses don't help with tanning

The wide-brimmed hats or an umbrella will work. Sunglasses won't help. Be sure to get one of the recommended hats - I always wear a "regular" hat, and I was tan before I knew what had happened!

I tanned after accidentally keeping my game on without closing the 3DS. I am always wearing the Santa hat, so I suppose that does not count, or maybe it assumes I am not just standing in one place for hours?

That is not a wide-brimmed hat, at least I don't see why the game would consider it to be that way.

My mayor wears a crown and a jester's mask and has not tanned one bit, so I think masks can keep them from tanning, too, since the crown is definitely not wide brim.

Not all wide-brimmed hats work. I tried using the Gracie hat, and I still ended up with a tan. :<

I use a conical straw hat and I believe the regular straw hat works too.

i usally just run around with an umbrella. c:
but, i'm bad at remembering to keep it on sometimes. </3

i play a lot during the day, and i've only gotten a shade darker.
