So basically what happens is i'm just chilling and playing normally when suddenly my character starts moving on their own. Like, I'm not touching the joycon and they just move in the same direction (north or "upwards" if you will). I gate it because i might me hitting a rock with my shovel and just like that, i'm digging a hole next to me and the whole timer thing is screwed up. This INFURIATES me so bad. Most of the time, it is not so terrrible and if i move the analog in a different direction it stops but ugh, the fact that it is so subtle annoys me.
I´ve looked into this and, as I suspected, I have joycon drift. I tried calibrating and updating the joycons but still same thing. Cleaned out with some alcohol and a q-tip and it gets better but only for a little bit.
I was wondering if anyone had any tips or if this happened to other people because apparently, a whole bunch of switches have this problem. I´ve asked my friends who own the console and none of them have had this happen. I spent all my money on New Horizons and really can't afford another set of joycons so any help is appreciated.

You can try to recalibrate the control sticks. It's in your Switch settings under controllers. It helps a bit. Mine drifts left pretty hard sometimes. Luckily I primarily play using a pro controller, which doesn't do this.

I get the hitting a rock and just randomly turn and dig a hole all the time. Also every once in a while my character will very slowly walk without me doing it. Its annoying and I've only had my switch since January

If it isn't too bad you can live with it, but yhe likely cause is hair or dirt under the joycon analog flap.

Fix, take a needle and a can of air duster. Lift the flap with the needle and blow air in there. Then go into your settings and calibrate the analog stick that is affected.

This works for me. My problem is I have pets so their hair gets everywhere.

Ah yes the joycon drift. A huge chunk of us experience it and there's those lucky mf who are like never happened to me. You might have to invest in buying a new one at some point where your joycon might become unusable.
I know many can't afford extra controllers and such but if I'm reading correctly and this is your left joycon look into hori's cheap price dpad controller. Mine has never drifted and it's been a year+ unlike my joycon who last 10 months and it starts drifting. People recommend a pro controller which the price does go down during father's day but also pro controllers can drift as well. Also you can probably look into power a pro controllers and such but it has its cons.

I tried recalibrating them but this still happens. I started considering purchasing a pro controller but doesn't it make playing (not on the tv) kinda uncomfortable? For example, i like playing ACNH laying on my bed but maybe you're not one to do that and the pro controller is great. Let me know if you have any "lazy" ways of playing jksjksdjdk i hope you get what i mean.

OMg it is SO ANNOYING. and by the time i have re positioned myself the timer is done so i can't get any more materials. Also the slowly walking thing YES. I just hate it cause i'll enter de museum for exmple, stop paying attention for a bit and when i come back i'm at the fossils section instead of opposite Blathers. My switch is p new too and i hate that this happens.

I haven't considered the air thing! Very useful! I'll try that for sure. Thank you so much!

Oh my goodness, I hadn't seen this and it's fantastic. The hori dpad sounds amazing and it is within my budget if i save for a little. Since i only need the left one this is a life saver. I have a question tough, can it be used when playing with the switch in TV mode? Because i'm saying some people saying it only works for handheld. From what you're saying you seem to have it so is that true?
PS: also yes, those people who have never experienced it are a lucky bunch

yeah you’ve been cursed by the drift. you could try buying a kit or investing in a pro controller if you don’t use handheld often!
By a kit do you mean like a new pair of joycons? Been considering the pro controller as well since it's cheaper but i'd be sacrificing handheld which is a god sent lol.

I had joycon drift a while ago, and it was such a pain. Temporarily, I would use tweezers to lift up the flaps under the joystick and blow into it at an angle. It would work for a while, but it would always revert back after a couple days, so I just did it over and over again lol. Eventually, I just ended up getting a pro controller. I later sent the joycons to Nintendo for repair, as they fix up joycon drift for free now after some lawsuit or something, and now they're as good as new. Only downside is that you couldn't use your joycons for 1-2 weeks. You could also try buying replacement joysticks online and fix the joycons yourself.

I feel your pain. The rock hitting and slow walking is the worst :( If it only just started I also suggest using the compressed air method. Mine was fixed for about 3 months after I first did that. My joycons are long gone now and probably not fixable with my own clumsy self cleaning plus I get beagle dog hairs everywhere all the time 😩 I’m used to it now so I just live with it but I also have a pro controller to fall back on. I do like the pro but I prefer kicking back on my bed handheld style. With the pro I have to sit at my desk with the tiny screen propped up because I don’t have a TV to connect it to at the moment, haha 😅

Ah joycon drift strikes again. Happens to my Switch as well, despite getting replacement joycons so I usually just play with my Pro controller. But I can't began to tell you how many times Link walked off a cliff in Breath of the Wild because of joycon drift.

this has happened to me, too! i have the switch lite and sometimes my character will just start moving on their own - it hasn’t happened in a while but i have no idea how i have joycon drift already when i’ve owned this console for less than 3 months lmaoo

It's the infamous left joycon drift. It's getting worse for me especially when rock hitting. My character will suddenly turn around and very annoyingly fills up the hole that I dig. There was one time where she spinned the shovel before hitting the rock, like oh, I'm showing you a new skill. I was like, what the hell are you doing?!! I even thought it was a special shovel I bought from Nook's Cranny. Luckily I have the pro controller, but still the joycon drift is truly affecting gameplay. Replacement units also suffer the same problem. Nintendo should do something about it, not just ignore it and expect people to just live with it.

Sometimes when I hit B to run, the keyboard pops up.

Please don't tell me it's drift.. as it's only two months old. :(

Maybe it's the gripcase just pressing on the button or something.
It doesn't happen often.. only twice.

apparently there are joycon repair kits. Last time someone made a thread about the joycon drift, someone linked to one of these kits. wish I had saved the link because my drift is getting BAD

I would love to send them over to Nintendo but the thing is that I live in Argentina and it would take AGES for the joy cons to leave and then have the new ones delivered back. Especially during these times in which everything is slowed down. Also, they could probably get stuck in customs and it’s all too complicated here. I hate it.

Oh no mannn, that sucks so much, poor Link ;(
Also, despite getting new joycons those broke too?? I’m so sorry fr you. So do you not play handheld anymore? You just switched to TV? Cause I might do that

You sent your joy cons to Nintendo to get them fixed and those fixed ones broke too?? Or did you buy some new ones? The drift affects the pro controller too? I am considering getting it but if drift is in the mix it’s a big no no.

It doesn’t sound like drift since it normally doesn’t do that! It probably is the gripcase like you said so I’d rest assured. Also, only twice ever? Prolly your finger slipped or something, I say you don’t have to worry.

there are YouTube videos about this with kits linked in their description! I think I also saw the replacement kits on amazon. I’ll look into it but I hope this helps

Yeah, definitely JoyCon drift. Amazing controllers, but horribly designed and built. Don't know if it is an option, but I suggest investing in a Pro Controller at some point.

I personally have never sent my Switch to Nintendo for repairs. Only reading from others' experience about it. I dreaded the process of sending it for repairs, what if it got lost, what about my save files.. I just can't trust other people to handle it, lol! My drift only started recently after I heavily use my Switch to play AC. The pro controller is fine, no problem with it but sometimes I just want to use the attached joycons to play like before going to sleep.

I've had 2 sets of joy cons fall foul of 'THE DRIFT' I am dreading the day my animal crossing ones go the same way. I personally have a pro controller also because it happened alot whilst on Zelda BOTW which infinitely more annoying than the annoyance level on AC.
