I was experimenting with an "all original" Jacques in boxes ready to adopt.
When I adopted him into another town, I time travelled there so his claim appeared and he moved in in boxes.
The next day, I went early to his house (8:29AM) and was standing in front of his door until the chimney showed activity (8:30).
I entered the house with Jacques still asleep and inspected the furnishing.
There was a breaker missing at the back-east wall!

Further inspecting the villager's data there was no breaker in his inventory, though there should be "initial".
Then I went to Re-Tail and what did I find? Jacques' breaker that he had put for sale! :D

Since he actually did not have a chance to leave the house before, I suspect Reese offering a pick-up service for stuff a villager wants to sell. ;)

This is somewhat logical, since the goods offered at Re-Tail are generated at game start.
So Jacques's breaker was for sale "before" he even awoke. :D

On the other side there is a slight chance, an "all original" villager offered for adoption arrives "incomplete", with furniture "missing". :)

Haha, that would explain why that breaker vanished! That's why I just flood Re-Tail with flowers so villagers can't put their stuff up for sale. XD

This has definitely happened to me before, with Timbra. She had only just moved in, then when I checked Re-Tail, she had put her dresser up for sale! I was super shocked! Though I didn't time it the way you had, so who knows if she sold it before she completely moved in or not.
