Does gifting bells to villagers decrease friendship?

A few weeks ago, I did something really stupid and gifted one of my villagers Mira some bells, she returned it to me, and I am a bit worried that it lowered the friendship, I had no idea that you were not supposed to gift bells to villagers and that it was treated negatively. Does gifting villagers bells lower the friendship of the villager?

Nah, I think its just a prank. Ive done that with my villager, and we were still cool.
