If you're aiming to get a 5-star island rating, the golden watering can, and the Jacob's Ladder... then your island must be weed-free.
But, weeds really adds to the natural aesthetic especially if you want to have a forest or going for a nature theme in your island. So if you don't care about ratings and the golden watering can, then let weeds grow.

I think I’m a far way off that so I might just relax on the weeding

My island's definitely not weed free and I have a five star rating. I think there's an upper limit but I don't think you have to get rid of it completely?
You need more than 15 weeds/trash before it starts affecting the rating, however if you have plenty of other stuff you can compensate for the weeds and still have a 5 star.

I actually hate the fact that your island needs to be weed-free in order to get a 5-star rating.
I think the weeds actually look great in this game and the terrain without them looks kinda bland and artificial...
I suppose after (if ever) I get a 5-star rating, I'll just let everything re-grow.
I also haven't been weeding much because of Earth day - have no idea what it will even entail but I remember in previous games, weds had to be given to Leif for some rewards?

The weeds that look like little flowers are actually quite nice.. when I first started playing I didn't even realise they were weeds at first, just thought they were some fancy new kind of flower. I asked my friend if they could pull majority of my weeds because I was lazy and they needed them, so I let them keep every weed they pulled. xD

The "weed-free" thing is based on what I've read on guides online.
But as Bioness & biksoka mentioned above, there's a small limit on weeds/trash before it affects the rating. I guess that makes sense considering weeds spawn everyday.
Still, around 10 weeds for a forest/nature aesthetic seems... pointless. :/

Follow-up: I'm at two stars, and haven't completely de-weeded my town. Should I remove weeds? Furthermore, how much furniture do I need to have set up?
