I want to expand the neighbour area, but in order to do that I have to remove the river, and that means removing bridges as well :[ River is marked with white.
How does your map look?

Yes, I have lots of rivers. It really adds to the island. Most islands I have seen have more, smaller rivers acting as dividers between areas (along with terraforming), so you could try that...move your river and make it narrower to save space :)

I don't think I've seen a map yet where they terraformed away all the rivers going through the island. Altered them, sure...

I got rid of one of my rivers since it was running through my residential area, and thinned out the second one a little bit. And I terraformed around my lake since I wanted to keep one body of water unaltered =)

Yup. My rivers are how they originally were, just straightened some of the edges.

Surprisingly, I actually kept both the river streams that entered my island. The only water modification I did on my island is that I changed the location of the waterfall near the mountainous area in the north. I wish we could change the orientation of the rivers, since I would have loved to create a narrow divide in half for my island :cautious:

I still have my original river with two south exits. So far, I have an upscale neighborhood in the back and another neighborhood along with res service and shops in the front by the beach.

I only changed my rivers a little but I keep seeing islands with straight rivers and they look so nice. I don't know if I can make it work on my island though.

I've pretty much kept my original map (very minimal terraforming) so yes. I think in your case, you can redirect the river a bit since you probably don't need that much extra space for your neighborhood.

my river still goings through my island.. the only thing i changed is that i moved it slightly higher to make more room for the resident services area. terraforming rivers was stress-inducing for me so i tried to do as little of it as possible since i already mostly liked how it was.

I have kept my island virtually untouched, so the river and other areas are pretty much the same as they were when I started the game. I only reshaped a few areas that were awkward to allow for better bridge placement.

Not anymore - I did a lot of terraforming and I separated the river into different bodies of water. My southwest river mouth is starts at my campsite and is a little lake area that opens up then flows into the ocean. My other river mouth is on the east of my island, and is connected to a waterfall/upper lake.

i'm still deciding how to use my rivers--i used my south river as an opening for a bunny-head shaped pond c:

I think your map is perfect to remove either bit of the river! The right part makes it more natural starting with the waterfall, but leaving the left part up also looks nice and you can turn the other outlet into a nice pond area. I definitely consider stopping one of my river outlets early.

Here are some examples of that pulled from the internet:
