So I'm already getting the game today, and I'm planning on playing offline first since I can't subscribe to Nintendo Switch Online atm (financial things, I'm still a student so I don't have enough money atm since I spent it already on the game itself and don't want to borrow money from my parents), is there like a disadvantage of not playing online? I mean I know I can't visit others island for some time but are there other major things I would miss out on if I don't have NSO yet?

i mean other than like. maybe it being hard to make bells via the turnip trade/having trouble finding items or dreamies u want not much. if thats important to u u might wanna consider it but otherwise i think u could play just fine. i know it would heavily impact my playstyle though.

Thanks for the input, yeah that is what I thought money and items would be harder for me for a while since I can't visit others' islands for great turnip prices and catalouging and such, I do have a set of dreamies but I think I'd be fine with that for now... Ughhh how I wish their online services are free like back in 3DS, now I have to play on my own for a while which sucks

I would say for a game like this the $20 annual fee is really, really worth it because of the benefits from trading and interacting with people online, but you can definitely make it work without it. Of course, it would help if you were in close contact with someone else who had the game, but in these unique global circumstances that is especially difficult.

If you're not against time-traveling it will be much easier. You could time travel a day at a time and earn the bonus Nook Miles+ rewards to earn the tickets to go island hopping, and there's the campsite trick which has seemingly helped a lot of people find specific villagers.

All in all, you can definitely make it work!

You can make it work... I'm not sure if it will be possible to obtain all the different fruit types this way though (though non-native fruits occasionally spawn on the Islands, it'll usually be the same type of fruit that repeats itself).
As some others have said, trading is another issue.
It's definitely not impossible to play or enjoy the game without the membership though.
I didn't have it during my first 2 weeks of playing and I enjoyed the game just fine.

I think you can get a free-trial of online play that you can shut off before it bills you. I played offline for the first week or so then flipped that on to see if it felt worth it to me. At that point I was ready to start trading items and villagers. I ended up thinking to $20 a year was worth it so I went ahead and purchased the subscription. You might find that you don't need it though!

I have a NSO subscription but have yet to play online due to my anxiety. I don't feel like I'm missing out on much as I rarely bother with the stalk market and I'm trying to collect all the items and villagers that I want by myself.
So unless you care about these things I'd say you'll be fine without a subscription for now.

Aside from trading and getting foreign fruits, the only things you won't be able to access are

- other players' islands to sell turnips (obviously)
- different colors of Nook Mile Items (as they're island locked)
- custom designs at Ables Sisters

Here's a tip. Play offline until you save up 1-2m bells, then wait for a good week with turnip prices in the low or mid 90s, then use the 7-day free trial for NSO + some online communities or resources to find a nice island and make a bunch of money. Then you don't have to stress about bells for a while.

Hi! I suggest that if you look into getting the Nintendo Online at some point to go in on it with some friends. (: I went ahead with 7 other friends of mine from college and we ended up only having to pay $4.35-ish annually, and it's been a great enhancement to our gameplay, especially being physically so far apart.

It might be a little harder to make money, since by far the most efficient way to get bells is through the stalk market. You wouldn't be able to visit other islands to sell turnips, so you'd be locked into whatever prices are at your store, meaning you'd really have to gamble with how many turnips you buy. You'll also have a hard time finding all the fruits, like someone mentioned above. I have online and it still took me a couple weeks to get cherries. Overall your game will be played at a slower pace compared to people with online, since you won't be able to trade. This wouldn't be a big problem if you're okay with time-traveling, though. If your financial situation isn't great right now then it's totally understandable to not want to pay $20 for it. The only reason I have it is because it was a gift, but I do plan on renewing it once this year's subscription is gone because I personally find that it's worth it.

It's like a buck eighty something a month.

That's not even two McChickens. That's like one and 8/10ths McChickens...

Find a way to make it work and you'll thank yourself. (y)

Mmmmmmm McChicken...

I played most of my new leaf days offline and only later as a way to revive the game I picked up the online. So I say that this game can be played amazing offline too! But I would take a break from trading forums perhaps so that you don't get jealous of what others have and such! I think this game is easier to play offline than new leaf for example because you can always look for villagers by yourself by island hoping!

And now with Leif update, she sells foreign flowers as well!

I play offline currently but the free online access i got for a week was really helpful in getting the fruit and flowers i did not have. Make the most of yours if you got one and still havent used it. I can provide you with whatever you need, just let me know.

Nintendo online has a family plan so if any of your friends are paying for that you could ask them to add you to their plan. Otherwise you won't be missing out on that much, other than that it's easier to get more items and flower variety (+fruits) if you trade with other people online.

Furniture:
Getting different color furniture may be a nightmare. It seems the colors Nook sells are the color you're locked to. You have a chance of finding a different color in a balloon or tree, which will unlock it in the catalog, but AFAIK, Nook's Cranny will stay locked to a single color.

Foreign Fruit
Getting foreign fruit is tricky, but not impossible. Everyone has a sister foreign fruit they can get on NMT islands. You just have to visit them often and you'll find them. I don't visit those Islands very much, and I've found at least 3 so far. You can also receive fruit from your mom. In past games, you could get foreign fruit offline by sending fruit to your villagers via mail. It may still be possible in this game.

Dreamies.
if you have dreamies you want, you'll be at the mercy of RNG, unless you obtain amiibos for them.

Last, there are turnips and the stalk market.

The turnip game isn't too bad solo. There will be days you lose some money, but when you get into the rhythm, on average, you'll always be making more than you invest. I recommend https://stalks.io . It's extremely accurate at predicting your prices and pattern. Because of this, it can guide you to the best time to sell your turnips, incase the next follow price changes are all going further down hill, or if they will get higher than they currently are.

If you're likely to have a random or decreasing pattern for the week, it may be wise to make smaller investments for the week.

I got a subscription. I didn't particularly want to, as I don't use it much at all, but that's another discussion.

99% of the time, I am offline. I have 2 friends I have visited and trade with (mainly through the letter system), but the bulk of my island has been created through play on my own. It's definitely more difficult, but for me, ultimately more satisfying.

Currently i still play offline but i have a plan to go online. The only problem now is that i feel like my parents won't allow me to buy it since i already used alot of my own money for ACNH + Switch
